Late the following afternoon, the rebuilt engine was back in the International. Dale filled the necessary fluids and took his position at the controls while Jonah stood to the side where he could see the gauges and the repaired section without being near moving components. Silas remained at the edge of the open bay, holding his cap in both hands. Nobody needed to be reminded how much depended on what happened next.

Dale turned the key and engaged the starter. The engine rotated without catching, then turned again as the electrical system worked against the resistance of an old diesel that had been apart only a day earlier. He stopped, checked the indications Jonah had been watching, and tried once more. The starter labored for another moment before the engine caught and settled into the familiar rough, steady rhythm the Kesslers knew as well as the sound of their own kitchen clock.

Jonah felt the noise in his chest. He had heard that tractor run hundreds of times, and on ordinary mornings it had been little more than a background sound, like a dog barking beyond the fields or wind moving through the barn. Now every beat mattered. He studied the gauges, listened for changes, and waited for the warm engine to reveal whether the repair that held in the test would also hold inside a working machine.

Dale did not immediately raise the engine speed. He let the machine settle while Jonah and Silas checked for abnormal leakage, unusual noise, and other warning signs. Gradually they moved through the planned operating checks, stopping to inspect rather than trying to make up lost time. The repaired area stayed dry, the gauges remained where they should, and the engine responded without the troubling change in sound Dale had feared.

"She sounds like herself," Dale said. Silas tilted his head, listening with his eyes partly closed. "That's because she is herself," he replied. "She's just had somebody pay attention to her." Jonah smiled, then looked back at the block, unwilling to let a sentimental remark distract him from the machine.
