She opened the menu as though she had been seated anywhere else.

Ashley waited for a reaction that never came.

Then she cleared her throat.

“If you find the prices too high, you could choose something light. Perhaps a simple soup.”

Mary looked up.

“Thank you, dear. I’ll choose something appropriate for me.”

Ashley turned away sharply.

For the first time, she felt defeated by a person who had not fought with her at all.

From across the room, she continued watching Mary. The older woman slowly read the menu, occasionally nodding as though thinking through her choice. Her wrinkled, calloused fingers rested calmly on the table.

Several younger servers passed and gave her sympathetic looks, but they kept moving.

Mary seemed untouched by the humiliation Ashley was trying to create.

The kitchen door swung open every few minutes only a short distance from Mary’s chair. Warm air rushed through it with the smell of butter, roasted meat, and metal heated over flame. Servers hurried around the table carrying trays, forcing Mary to tuck her chair closer than she should have needed to. Even then, she thanked anyone who passed too close and never once complained.

Ashley noticed all of it. She had chosen the table precisely because it was noisy and inconvenient, yet Mary managed to make the place look almost peaceful simply by refusing to be offended into anger. The more gracefully Mary endured the treatment, the more exposed Ashley’s intentions became to anyone paying attention.

A busser named Daniel briefly asked Mary whether she needed water. Before Mary could answer, Ashley appeared and told him she would handle the table herself. Daniel nodded and left, but the look he gave Ashley lingered. Ashley felt it and resented him for seeing too much.

She returned to the service station convinced that Mary’s calmness was an act. Surely the woman was trying to prove something. Surely she wanted sympathy. Ashley never considered the simpler possibility that Mary had lived long enough to understand that another person’s prejudice did not have to become her own humiliation.

That only deepened Ashley’s resentment.

When Mary eventually folded the menu and placed it down, Ashley approached again.

“Have you decided what you’d like to order?” she asked.

Mary smiled.

“I’ll have the Filet de Rossini, please. Help me with that, dear.”

Ashley froze.

The Filet de Rossini was among Lumiere’s most luxurious and expensive dishes, prepared with premium beef, foie gras, and a rare truffle sauce. Wealthy guests ordered it without hesitation, but Ashley had never imagined that Mary would choose it.

She studied the older woman’s face, looking for uncertainty.

There was none.

“Are you sure?” Ashley asked, deliberately emphasizing every word. “That is one of the most expensive dishes on our menu. It is not cheap.”

Mary nodded politely.

“I understand. Thank you for reminding me. Please order it for me.”

Ashley forced a smile.

“Of course, ma’am.”

But instead of immediately entering the order, she began delaying.
