Steven rarely arrived without warning. His visits were usually known in advance and prepared for carefully.
That evening, however, he simply entered and looked around.
Guests who recognized him nodded. Steven returned their greetings briefly as he moved through the dining room.
Then his eyes reached the back of the restaurant.
He saw Henry Thompson sitting beside the elderly woman.
His expression changed instantly.
The seriousness softened. Surprise and affection filled his face.
He began walking faster.
Ashley’s stomach tightened.
Henry stood and greeted him.
“Hello, Steven. Good to see you.”
Steven shook his hand, but his attention remained on Mary.
Then, in a voice warm enough to be heard by everyone nearby, he said, “Mother, I’m sorry I’m late. You haven’t been waiting too long, have you?”
The restaurant fell silent.
Ashley stared at Mary.
The old sweater.
The worn shoes.
The modest purse.
The woman she had treated as though she could not afford to enter Lumiere was the owner’s mother.
Mary stood slowly and took Steven’s hands.
“It’s all right, dear. I haven’t been here too long. You’ve been busy, and I’m happy you came.”
Steven smiled, but then he noticed the strange tension around the table.
His eyes moved from Mary to Henry and finally to Ashley, whose face had gone pale.
“Mother,” he said gently, placing one hand on her shoulder, “is everything all right?”
Mary shook her head slightly, clearly reluctant to create trouble.
Henry answered instead.
“Steven, your mother is being modest. She has not been treated properly since she entered this restaurant. Ashley appears to have made assumptions about her, seated her in this corner, and delayed her order for quite some time.”
Steven’s face changed.
He turned slowly toward Ashley.
He did not shout.
