And another.

When she reached him, Cole did not hug her. He knew better than to turn every victory into a spectacle.

He simply held out his hand.

Emily took it.

Behind her, Cody whooped.

Then the whole shop erupted.

Emily looked over her shoulder at the men cheering like she had won a race and began to cry.

This time she did not hide it.

A month later, an envelope arrived from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Emily carried it upstairs unopened.

She set it on the kitchen table and stared at it for twenty minutes.

Then she called Cole.

"Come up here."

His voice changed immediately. "What happened?"

"Just come up."

He found her sitting at the table with the envelope between both hands.

"Is that it?"

She nodded.

"Open it."

"I can't."

Cole sat down.

"Want me to?"

Emily pushed it toward him.

He opened it carefully.

The decision was not magic and it was not everything her service officer had requested. It did not erase two years of frustration or turn the bureaucracy into a villain defeated by one dramatic call. But it recognized the service connection supported by the record, established the medical basis for continued care, and awarded benefits that included retroactive compensation based on the revised effective determination.

Cole read the page twice because he wanted to be certain.

Then he set it down.

"It's approved."

Emily did not move.

"The service-connected part?"

"Yes."

"The care?"

"Yes."

"The retroactive amount?"

Cole looked at the next page. "It is there."

Her hands covered her mouth.

For a few seconds, no sound came out.

Then she folded over the table and cried.

Cole stood beside her with one hand on the back of her head.

"It's done," he said.

Emily shook her head through the tears.

"Not done."

Cole waited.

"There are people still doing this alone."
