Now continuation stood in her arms.

Daniel had a wife.

He had a home.

He had a little girl named Emily.

A life had grown out of that day.

Cole's voice came quietly from across the bay.

"It counted."

Emily heard him.

"You hear me?" he said. "It counted."

Her grip on Daniel tightened.

"I know," she whispered.

For once, she did.

Daniel stayed for nearly three hours.

He told the story the way Emily never would have told it about herself. He described fear without glorifying danger. He described how the people around him had tried to keep each other alive. He described the moment Emily appeared when he had already accepted that nobody was coming.

The mechanics listened.

Marcus took off his cap and held it against his chest.

Cody stopped pretending not to cry.

Reese sat with both elbows on his knees, eyes fixed on the floor.

Emily interrupted Daniel twice to correct details that made her sound braver than she believed she had been.

The third time, Daniel looked at her.

"Could you let me have my version?"

She almost argued.

Then she stopped.

"Okay."

That one word was another kind of recovery.

Before he left, Daniel promised to return with Rachel and little Emily. He hugged her again beside the front door.

"I used to think I owed you my life," he said.

Emily started to protest.

He raised a hand. "I know. You hate that sentence."

"I really do."

"So I don't think of it that way anymore."

"Good."

"I think I get to live it well. That's how I say thank you."

Emily looked at him for a long moment.

"That's better."

"Yeah?"

"Much."

After Daniel drove away, the shop remained quiet.

Cody was the first to speak.

"We had no idea who we were working next to."

No one answered.

He looked toward the old parts counter.

"For a year, I walked past her every day and thought nothing. She was just there. Like the shelves were there."

Emily stood in the doorway to the back room listening.
