"You have spent three months acting afraid that disagreeing with me will turn you back into the man who called me sweetheart."

The room went awkwardly quiet.

Marcus flushed.

Emily softened her tone. "You apologized. I accepted it. I need your brain, not your guilt."

He looked at her.

"You mean that?"

"Yes."

Reese nodded slowly. "All right."

"And Cody?"

"Yeah?"

"Stop asking me questions you can answer with five minutes of thought."

"How do I know which ones those are?"

Everyone stared at him.

He grinned. "Kidding. Mostly."

The shop changed gradually.

Emily's greatest surprise was not that she could lead.

It was that she loved teaching.

She had never thought of herself as a teacher because the Army had taught her to think in terms of readiness, maintenance, and responsibility. Yet the habits that had made her good in the field translated naturally to a garage full of people trying to understand stubborn machines.

She did not begin with answers.

She began with silence.

A young apprentice named Luis joined the shop that autumn. On his third week, he spent nearly an hour chasing an intermittent misfire on a rebuilt engine. Finally he turned to Emily in frustration.

"I checked everything."

"No, you checked everything you expected to be wrong."

"What's the difference?"

Emily pulled a stool beside the motorcycle.

"Close your eyes."

Luis stared at her.

"Seriously?"

"Seriously."

He closed them.

"Now listen. Don't diagnose. Don't name anything yet. Just listen."

The engine idled.

Luis frowned.

A few seconds passed.

"There's a click."

"Where?"

"Left side. Maybe upper."

"Maybe. Keep listening. Is it random?"

He tilted his head.

"No. It's regular."

"Good. What does regular tell you?"

Luis opened his eyes.

"Something mechanical tied to rotation."

Emily smiled. "Now you can start looking."
