"I was angry."
"So was I."
"People say things when they're angry."
"Yes. Then sometimes people believe them."
Tears appeared in her eyes.
"You ruined everything."
I felt anger rise for the first time since Tuesday.
"No, Sarah. I stopped maintaining everything."
"That's the same thing when you know I depended on you."
"You called that dependence control whenever I asked you to spend less."
"Because you did control me with money."
"Did I ever stop you from working?"
She looked away.
"Did I ever tell you not to earn your own money?"
"That's not the point."
"Did I ever take money from your account?"
"No."
"Did I take your clothes? Your camera? Your business equipment?"
"No."
"Did I interfere with your personal credit?"
"No."
"Then what I did was stop funding the life you told me was replaceable."
Her face crumpled.
"I didn't mean it."
I believed she regretted saying it. That was not the same as believing the thought had never existed.
"What happened with Jared?"
She flinched.
"He's a loser."
"That's not what you said last week."
"I was wrong."
"About him or about me?"
