I waited. Sarah continued.
"We need flights Friday morning. Business class if first is stupid expensive. The Mandarin Oriental has availability, but we need to book tonight."
"Who is paying?"
Her expression changed.
"Seriously?"
"Yes."
"Mark, this is my career."
"That wasn't the question."
"I don't have five thousand dollars sitting around. You know that."
"Then don't take a five-thousand-dollar weekend."
She laughed once in disbelief.
"You make more than enough."
"I am not spending five thousand dollars to fly to Miami so I can watch you orbit a man who insults me in my own home."
"Jared doesn't insult you."
"He called my career golden handcuffs at dinner."
"That's not an insult."
"He told you I have a scarcity mindset because I wouldn't buy you a Cartier bracelet."
Sarah crossed her arms.
"You do have a scarcity mindset."
I stared at her.
"Do you even know what that phrase means anymore?"
"It means you're afraid to live."
"I'm afraid to waste."
"Same thing to you."
I placed my keys on the counter.
"I'm not booking the trip."
Sarah's mouth tightened.
"So you're sabotaging me."
"No."
"You know how important this is."
"Then fund it through your business."
