Pike shoved Cole hard enough to send him stumbling backward two steps. Cole caught himself on the edge of the path and looked at his sergeant with stunned disbelief. The contact lasted a second, but the meaning of it was unmistakable. The same officer who had insisted he was investigating an assault had just put his hands on a subordinate because he disagreed with him. Maya looked up at the porch camera and noted the position of every person in the frame.

"Sergeant," she said, "that physical contact was witnessed by us and your own officers. Threatening a subordinate for refusing to sign a false statement is serious misconduct." Pike turned toward her with his face red. He accused her of trying to turn his men against him, then demanded again that the video be surrendered. Naomi offered to provide copies to an independent investigator under documented chain-of-custody procedures. Pike refused, apparently hearing only that he would not be allowed to control the originals.

He announced that the area needed to be secured against potential destruction of evidence and ordered Shaw to check the side entrance. Mercer reminded him that there was no emergency and that the ownership records had already been examined. Pike dismissed the objection and started toward the side of the house himself, with Shaw following reluctantly. Maya moved into the walkway rather than toward them, keeping a safe distance and explaining that no officer had consent or legal authority to search the residence.

"Evidence is being tampered with," Pike said. "You can see them using that tablet. I don't have to stand here while they erase everything."

Naomi held up the screen so he could see the unbroken recording. "We are preserving footage, not deleting it. If you think you have a basis for a search, take your facts to a judge." Her words were calm, but she could feel her pulse in her throat.

Shaw reached for Maya's forearm to move her out of the path. She withdrew her arm immediately, and when he caught it again she used the smallest movement necessary to free herself and keep a little distance between them. His wrist struck the porch rail, and he pulled away with an angry expression. Maya stepped back with her hands visible. "Do not grab me again," she said. "We can stand here and talk without anyone using force."

Pike saw only the result. He rushed forward, shouting that the agent had assaulted Shaw, and Naomi stepped into the open space between her sister and the approaching sergeant. Rather than strike him, she turned aside, leaving Pike stumbling into the grass when he tried to stop too abruptly. Cole shouted for everyone to separate, and Mercer moved between Shaw and the porch before either man could lunge again. The encounter lasted seconds, but it left the yard full of men breathing hard and two sisters who understood that the next impulsive movement could be far more dangerous.

"You assaulted police officers," Pike shouted as he rose from the grass. "Both of you. And this time you're going to jail."

Maya stood beside Naomi at the top of the steps, her heart beating fast despite the steady tone she forced into her voice. She said the women had not struck anyone, and that the cameras showed Shaw grabbing her before she withdrew her arm. Cole confirmed it immediately, while Mercer said the sergeant had initiated the second confrontation by charging forward. Shaw looked at his wrist and said nothing.

Pike called Keller, describing the incident as an attack on his men during an attempt to secure burglary evidence. The lieutenant arrived within minutes, already visibly irritated as he stepped from his sedan. He listened to Pike's version with his arms folded, then asked Cole whether the agents had assaulted the officers. Cole answered that the men had approached the women without legal grounds and that both sisters had reacted defensively. Mercer supported him, adding that Pike should have ended the matter once the deed and credentials were available.
