Keller asked Naomi to play a clip showing the first encounter, then stood watching as the sergeant's own hand reached for Maya's wrist on the screen. His expression remained neutral, but his jaw worked once. He asked her to stop the playback and open the equipment information panel. Naomi complied, pointing out the recorded timestamps and the local storage identifier. Keller seemed satisfied until Pike abruptly stepped past him and reached toward the cabinet.
"That's enough," Pike said. "We'll take it in and let our technician decide what is real."
Naomi moved into the space between him and the equipment without striking or touching him. "The order doesn't allow that," she said. "Please move back." Pike tried to reach around her, and Shaw, hearing the commotion, stepped into the entrance from the porch. Maya turned toward him immediately and asked him to stop. He ignored her and caught Naomi around the upper arms, trying to pull her away from the cabinet.
"Let go of her," Maya said, her voice rising for the first time that day. Shaw did not immediately release Naomi, who had gone rigid with surprise and was struggling to keep her feet planted. Maya moved between them, separating his grip without hitting him, then stepped back as soon as Naomi was free. Shaw stumbled into the doorway and caught himself against the frame, his face reddening with embarrassment. Mercer came forward to keep him from moving in again.
"Stop," Cole shouted from the porch. "This is going beyond the order. Stop touching them."
Pike ignored him. He reached past Naomi again, extending an arm around Mercer, who had moved to block access to the cabinet. In the sudden confusion, the sergeant struck the shelf with his elbow, and the local recorder tipped forward. Naomi made an instinctive motion toward it, but she was too far away. The metal box fell to the hardwood, its cover splitting with a sharp crack and several internal parts skidding across the floor.
For a moment the whole hallway seemed to stop. Nobody spoke, and the only sound was the little kitchen clock ticking in the next room. Pike stared at the broken device with a strange expression of shock mixed with satisfaction. Shaw was breathing hard beside the doorway, while Mercer stood with one hand on the wall and looked down at the scattering of components. Cole's camera was still recording.
"Well," Keller said after several seconds, "that is unfortunate." His voice was almost conversational. "It appears the recording equipment was damaged during an inspection." Pike immediately pointed at Naomi and said she had knocked the unit down to prevent officers from seeing what it contained. He told Keller that the broken equipment should be treated as evidence destruction by the homeowners.
"That is false," Cole said before anyone else could answer. "Sergeant Pike knocked it down. His elbow hit the shelf while he tried to get around Officer Mercer." Mercer agreed that he had stepped into Pike's path and had seen the sergeant make contact with the cabinet. Shaw looked at the pieces on the floor and swallowed. He had been close enough to see the impact, though he was plainly not yet willing to say so.
Keller raised one hand, demanding silence, and began dictating a new report into his phone. He described the recorder as destroyed during an altercation initiated by the agents and said the equipment could no longer be relied upon for review. Maya asked him to pause and distinguish between damage to a device and the separate question of who caused it. The lieutenant refused to amend the wording. He said investigators would determine the cause later.
