Naomi crouched beside the broken unit without touching the loose circuit boards. She could see the crushed housing, the damaged drive bracket, and the broken cable connector, but she also knew the remote system had received every relevant file well before the fall. The loss was upsetting because the box had been part of her father's original installation, not because it ended the record. Maya crouched beside her, and Naomi whispered that the off-site originals were intact. She did not need to say more; Maya understood.

"Nobody move the components until they have been photographed," Maya told Keller. "This is now evidence of property damage, and the officers who were present have conflicting accounts. We need independent preservation of the scene."

Keller gave a cold smile. "You don't get to direct my investigation, Agent Carter." Maya replied that she was preserving her objection, not directing him. She had learned that a calm disagreement recorded at the right moment could outlast a dozen threats.

Keller glanced toward the front door, where Cole stood with the camera still active. "Officer Cole, step outside and return to patrol duties," he ordered. Cole did not immediately move. "I witnessed what happened," he said. "If I leave now, I want it documented that the sergeant reached for the recorder and struck the cabinet while Officer Mercer blocked him. The agents did not damage it."

"Officer, you are relieved from this scene," Keller said through clenched teeth.

Cole looked at Mercer, who nodded once. Then the younger officer moved to the porch, speaking a final sentence loudly enough for the microphone under the eave to capture it. He said Pike had ordered body cameras disabled during previous encounters with homeowners and that he was willing to identify the dates and personnel involved. The statement made Pike go still. Keller ordered Cole away before he could say another word, but the officer had already spoken.

Mercer followed him outside. At the edge of the path he turned back and asked whether the lieutenant would need a written statement from him about the recorder. Keller told him to report to the station and wait for instructions. Mercer answered that he would document what he saw whether or not anyone requested it. His voice carried none of the young officer's nervousness, only the exhausted resolve of a man who had spent too long hoping a problem would disappear without forcing him to choose.

Shaw remained in the doorway, staring at the broken equipment. Pike looked toward him with an expression of expectation. "You saw what they did," the sergeant said. Shaw opened his mouth, then glanced at Keller.

"There was a struggle," he answered. "I grabbed one of the women, and everybody moved. I didn't see her hit the machine." Pike's face darkened at the refusal to repeat the accusation outright.

Keller declared the inspection terminated and said his office would refer the alleged obstruction to federal authorities. The men left through the front door without offering to help gather the broken pieces. Maya remained standing beside the cabinet until she heard their engines start. Naomi kept her hands off the fragments, allowing the cameras to document their position before moving to preserve them under photographs and written notes. The old wall hooks and the little hall bench had survived, but the cabinet beneath them looked like a piece of the house had been kicked apart.

When the vehicles disappeared, the sisters finally sat on the stairs. Naomi looked at the damage, then at the family photograph hanging opposite the doorway. "Dad paid for this system because he thought it would make things harder for anyone to lie about him," she said. "He would be furious that they broke it." Maya nodded. "He'd also tell us to write down the serial number, keep the damaged parts, and make sure nobody can pretend it fell on its own."
