The three officers moved at once, though they did not all move with equal certainty. The youngest, Officer Cole, was tall and narrow-shouldered, with alert eyes that kept searching for a reasonable next step. Shaw was heavier, his jaw set and his movements eager, and he took the driveway side as though he had been waiting for permission to close off an escape. Mercer, an older patrolman with sun lines around his eyes, moved toward the sidewalk more slowly and kept one hand away from his belt. From the porch, Maya could see the difference between men following an order and men enjoying it.

"Sergeant," Cole said, "they have a working key. Could we check the ownership information before we—"

"Cole, shut your mouth." Pike did not turn to look at him. "I decide what matters on my scene, and a key isn't going to tell me whether somebody stole a house." The phrase sounded ridiculous once spoken aloud, but no one laughed. Cole's ears turned red, and he took a step back toward the railing.

Maya felt her sister's shoulder touch hers, an old signal from childhood that meant slow down and think before speaking. She noticed the place where the security camera sat under the porch eave, its small green status light barely visible against the painted trim. James had mounted it after someone repeatedly damaged his mailbox and claimed the property had been abandoned. He had insisted on broad angles covering the steps and the front path rather than any neighbor's windows. Naomi had modernized the storage years later, adding automatic off-site backups so that a vandal could not solve the problem by tearing the camera off the wall.

"We grew up here," Maya said. "We aren't going anywhere, and we haven't committed a crime. I would like to know what specific information justified surrounding us."

Pike came another step closer. "I have a complaint about a break-in, and I have two people refusing to follow orders. That's all the information I need right now." He looked at Naomi's keys, then at Maya's jacket. "You can tell me the rest once you're off that porch."

"We are answering your questions," Naomi replied. "We are offering documents. What we aren't doing is pretending that standing on our family's steps is an offense." She spoke slowly enough that there could be no confusion about her words. Cole glanced again at the credential wallet partly visible beneath her jacket, but he had not yet seen the badge inside.

Pike's expression sharpened. "You think you can lecture me about my authority? I have spent sixteen years doing this job. I know what a burglar looks like when he's trying to talk his way out of trouble." His gaze moved deliberately between the two sisters. "And I know when people are in a neighborhood where they don't belong."

Maya felt anger rise like heat beneath her ribs, but she kept her hands relaxed at her sides. "Would you be talking to two white women this way if they told you they had inherited their father's house?" she asked. Pike flushed immediately and looked around to see whether the others had heard. Every officer had heard. So had a man watering shrubs across the street, who stopped moving his hose when Maya said the word white.

"Don't make this about race," Pike snapped. "You make it about race when you don't want to answer questions."

"We have answered every question," Maya said. "You are the one declining to verify the answers." Naomi watched Cole glance toward Pike and then quickly away. She recognized the discomfort of someone realizing that the person giving orders might be wrong but not yet knowing how to say so. She also recognized that a frightened colleague could become more dangerous if he decided protecting himself mattered more than protecting a stranger.

Pike gestured sharply toward the steps. "One at a time. Hands visible. Walk down slowly."
