"You're not tempted to keep any of it?" the younger clerk asked as the counting finished. Harmon gave the clerk a warning glance, but Daniel answered without offense. "I don't know who it belongs to. The amount doesn't change that." He had other things to do and did not want to spend his afternoon explaining himself to a stranger. He accepted his receipt, thanked them, and drove home to finish a chest of drawers.

Linda received Bobby's next message with a sinking feeling. The wallet had been turned over to police, and the courier was uncertain what to do about the observation he had been paid to perform. She told him not to contact her again. Then she went back to the office and tried to act as though the exercise had produced useful information. For the first time, however, she considered that Victoria might learn not simply that Daniel had passed the test, but that Linda had arranged it.

The problem surfaced the following week in an expense review. Ethan had been checking invoices associated with a delayed furniture shipment when he noticed a separate security payment coded to the same account. It was an amount large enough to require executive authorization, and no one in the security department recognized the project description. He contacted finance rather than confronting Linda directly. Within hours, compliance staff had identified the cash advance and traced the courier fee to the same arrangement.

Miriam Cole insisted on verifying facts before assigning blame. She spoke with the courier service, obtained Bobby's invoice, and asked him to explain the assignment in his own words. Bobby became frightened when he realized that the wallet had not been part of a routine company exercise. He produced the written instructions and admitted that he had watched Daniel from behind a parked car. He also gave the location and incident number of the police report, which compliance requested through the proper channels with Daniel's permission.

Ethan sat through the meeting feeling increasingly angry. He was accustomed to Linda's sharp questions and to her efforts to protect Sterling Living from reputational harm. This was different. She had used company resources to manipulate a private citizen, involved a courier under a misleading explanation, and created a police incident that might have endangered an innocent man.

More troubling, she had done it because she disapproved of the person Victoria chose to spend time with. Ethan understood that reporting the matter would be uncomfortable. He did it anyway.

Victoria read Miriam's preliminary findings in silence. The meeting took place in her office on a gray Monday morning, the city barely visible through a curtain of rain. She checked the transactions, the courier instructions, and the police report one by one, as though hoping some detail might transform the situation into a misunderstanding. Nothing did. Linda had acted without permission and had drawn a man she had never properly met into a manufactured test of his honesty.
