She told Daniel about the negotiations over dinner, not because she wanted advice but because she no longer wanted to separate the parts of her life into sealed compartments. He asked questions about the furniture itself, including whether customers could repair damaged components rather than replacing an entire piece. Victoria explained the costs and difficulties of changing production standards at scale. He listened and nodded, respecting the complexity instead of pretending a workshop answer automatically applied to a global manufacturer. They finished dinner without resolving every question, and Victoria discovered she did not mind.

Daniel had his own problems to handle. His truck needed repairs that cost more than he had budgeted, and a commercial customer delayed paying an invoice long enough to force him to postpone ordering supplies. He did not ask Victoria to intervene. When she offered to recommend a reputable mechanic, he accepted the recommendation but paid the bill himself. They had learned that independence was not the same as refusing every practical kindness, and that help offered respectfully left room for a person to say yes or no without shame.

Alice watched their relationship with the affectionate skepticism of a woman who had seen many people promise more than they could sustain. Alice's own expression softened. "He was a good husband to Claire. She was a good wife to him. If you're going to love somebody who's already lost so much, don't make him feel he has to forget it to make room for you."

Victoria set down the knife. "I won't." Alice studied her face and apparently liked what she saw. She picked up another apple and changed the subject to pie crust. Victoria left the house that afternoon with flour on her sleeves and the sense that she had been welcomed into something far more valuable than a circle of influential acquaintances.

The fundraiser took place in a school cafeteria decorated with paper snowflakes. Daniel donated a small restored oak table for the silent auction, and Victoria helped carry it through a side entrance so they would not block the doorway. A teenage volunteer named Maya Chen asked how
