They took their mugs onto the porch beneath a sky cleared by the wind. The city sounded far away here, though they were only a short drive from its financial district. For a while they talked about the evening: Carlos's conversation, Ethan's expression, the employee who had cried when her coworkers applauded her packaging redesign. Then the silence settled gently between them. Victoria watched the soft light from the front window fall across the porch boards.

"I tried to thank you that first night," she said eventually. "I thought if I offered enough money, I could balance whatever you had done for me. It never occurred to me that you might not want the balance settled." Daniel rested his mug on the step beside him.

"I knew what you were offering. I was grateful you wanted to be generous." Victoria shook her head. "I was trying to make sense of you using the only language I knew."

"You found another language," he said. Victoria smiled faintly. "I did. It took me a while."

She looked toward the dark workshop. "And now I don't want to thank you anymore, at least not in the way I did before. That isn't what this is." Daniel waited, giving her room to finish without guessing what she meant.

"I want to come home to this," she said. "Not to a reward or a story about a rich woman meeting an honest man. I want the tea, the workbench, the difficult customers, Alice telling us we've forgotten lunch. I want to hear about your day and tell you about mine. I want to be with you because I love the person you are, not because you found something I lost."

Daniel did not answer immediately. He looked down at their hands, remembering how long he had believed that loving someone new might mean betraying the woman he had lost. Claire remained present in the photographs, the tools she had chosen, and the countless things she had taught him about making a home. But he no longer felt that those memories demanded an empty place beside him for the rest of his life. He reached for Victoria's hand and held it firmly.

"I love you too," he said. The words sounded straightforward, without the elaborate promises people made when they wanted a moment to feel larger than life. Victoria closed her eyes briefly, surprised by how calm she felt hearing them. Daniel continued, "I don't know exactly what our life will look like. Yours comes with responsibilities I don't understand yet, and mine has a lot of sawdust in places it shouldn't. But I'd like to find out with you."

Victoria leaned against his shoulder. They stayed on the porch until the cold sent them inside, neither feeling any need to settle the question of houses or schedules that night. For once she understood that an important decision could be real without becoming a contract signed before morning. What mattered was not whether they already knew how to solve every difficulty. It was that they were willing to face the difficulties honestly together.
