The officer's radio crackled at 2:56. A voice identified itself as mall security. "Unit forty-seven, control. Harrison's confirms the card cleared. No stolen-card notice, no fraud report. Repeat, transaction approved."

Lena looked at Torres. "Did you hear that?"

"I did. Back it up ten seconds."

She played the segment again. Harlan pressed his radio earpiece close to his head and answered, "Copy." The timeline showed three minutes until he handcuffed Vanessa. The evidence did not merely contradict his claim that no one had told him the payment was legitimate. It recorded him acknowledging that exact information.

Marcus stood behind the lieutenant, his hands clasped together. He had remained quiet through most of the review, but now he let out a slow breath. "That's what I heard when he brought her toward the fountain. Security repeated it over the radio a second time."

Torres looked at Harlan, who had followed the group under instructions to remain available for questioning. His face had become pale. "Do you recognize your voice in that recording?" she asked.

He stared at the monitor. "It could be an edited feed."

"We've secured the original source and a verified copy," Torres answered. "You can raise concerns about authenticity through the review process. But you will not describe it as edited merely because it contradicts your report."

Sloan stepped forward. "Those radio calls go through several systems. There could be a timestamp mismatch."

Eli, who had come with the group to identify the equipment, looked toward the security director. "The event recorder syncs its clock with the mall network. So does our access log."

Sloan's mouth tightened. "You don't know everything about our systems, Eli."

"That's why the technician is verifying them," Olivia said. "Please stop interrupting."

Lena opened the next clip. It showed Vanessa turning around, hands visible behind her, while Harlan closed the cuffs. From this angle, there was no obstruction between the camera and the action. Vanessa did not lunge or pull away. The officer pulled her arms together with enough force to make her shoulders rise, then began steering her into the atrium.

The scene felt different from a distance. Vanessa had remembered the pressure and the humiliation. On the screen, she looked small beneath the mall's wide skylight, an ordinary person surrounded by expensive displays and people who had no idea why she was being arrested. Her hands were behind her back. Her head was still held high. The memory struck harder when she saw it from outside herself.

Lena had not noticed that the program-output switch remained in rehearsal mode. When she opened the full-screen review, the event system sent the feed to both the private monitor and the giant promotional display above the atrium. In the same instant, the image of Vanessa in handcuffs appeared twenty feet high over the fountain.

A ripple of conversation passed through the mall. People looked up. A woman who had seen the original arrest stopped beside the cafe and pointed. A teenager pulled out his phone. Volunteers preparing the stage froze with a box of programs between them. The enormous screen showed Harlan gripping Vanessa's arm while she tried to keep her balance.
