"They are. We'll document the chain from the event recorder through the copy, and the original will remain protected. The technician has identified the file information, and the mall has agreed to preserve the equipment."

"And the primary archive?"

"That will need a forensic examination. Right now we have an access log and a missing file, not a final explanation of why it went missing. We'll follow where the records lead."

Vanessa nodded. It was the answer she had wanted all afternoon: not a promise that everything would end in her favor, but a commitment to investigate what could be proved.

Torres hesitated. "I'm sorry you had to go through this."

"Thank you," Vanessa said. "I appreciate you checking."

The lieutenant looked toward the fundraiser stage. Guests were arriving, and the volunteers had begun moving chairs into position again. "Do you still have an event to run?"

"I do."

"Then let's get you back to it."

Vanessa reached for the cream-colored bag, which Eli had brought from the security office along with her wallet and receipt. The watch box remained inside, protected by tissue paper. For a moment she considered how absurdly close the entire ordeal had come to a simple ending: she could have walked out of Harrison Fine Jewelry, bought a cup of tea, and spent the next hour preparing a speech.

Instead, she had been handcuffed, accused, walked past strangers, threatened with removal, and forced to find independent evidence of a transaction already verified by the store. She did not feel victorious. She felt tired, angry, and relieved in unequal measure. But when Marcus came toward her with the men waiting behind him, she managed a small smile.

"You all kept your distance," she said. "Thank you."

Marcus looked down at her wrists. "We were worried."

"I know."

"You could have told us to do more."

"No," she said. "You did the hard part. You stayed calm when you had every reason not to."

He exhaled slowly. "That's what you taught us."

For the first time since Harlan had approached her outside the jewelry store, Vanessa felt the weight of her years of service settle around her in a way that comforted rather than confined. She had spent so long teaching people to act on evidence and maintain discipline under pressure. Now those lessons had held fifteen men steady in a crowded shopping mall while the truth was given time to emerge.

"Gentlemen," she said, lifting the shopping bag, "we have a fundraiser to finish setting up."

The men fell in beside her, not as guards and not as a show of force, but as friends who had come to honor one of their own. Across the atrium, the enormous screen switched from the scholarship banner to a photograph of Captain Sarah Mitchell in her younger years, smiling beside a group of service members at a formal ceremony. Vanessa looked up at the familiar face and felt her eyes sting unexpectedly.

Sarah would arrive in less than an hour. Vanessa still had a gift to wrap, a speech to deliver, and the difficult choice of how much of the afternoon she would allow to become part of the evening.
