"You're being directed to remain calm while we determine what happened. Your actions are being reviewed. This is not a verdict."
"She's destroyed my career!"
He moved forward again, and this time he brushed past Torres with his shoulder. Vanessa did not move. Harlan stopped an arm's length away, fists clenched, his face flushed with anger. The men watching from the hallway stayed back. Marcus's hands remained down, though Vanessa could see how much effort that cost him.
Torres caught Harlan by the forearm and turned him away before he could touch Vanessa. "That's enough. You are relieved from the remainder of this assignment. Step back and keep your hands visible."
Harlan turned toward her. "Lieutenant—"
"Now."
Another uniformed officer arrived from the mall entrance, responding to Torres's earlier call for assistance. Torres directed him to accompany Harlan to a private office while she contacted the watch commander. Under department procedure, Harlan surrendered his duty weapon and identification for secure storage while his administrative status was determined. He was not handcuffed. No criminal charge was announced in the atrium. Torres made it clear that the evidence would be reviewed through the proper process and that decisions about discipline or prosecution would not be made by applause or anger.
The distinction mattered to Vanessa. She did not want Harlan treated with the same disregard for procedure that he had shown her. She wanted the process to do what it was supposed to do, even for a man who had refused to give her that courtesy.
Sloan attempted to leave with the departing officer. Olivia stopped him. "Derek, your access to the surveillance systems is suspended pending an internal investigation. Please surrender your card to Human Resources and remain available for an interview."
"I can explain the missing footage," he said.
"Then explain it to the forensic specialist with the records in front of you," Olivia answered. "Not here, not now, and not by changing anything else."
Sloan handed over his card. His face was pale, and his right hand shook slightly as he unclipped it from his jacket. The man who had spent an hour trying to keep the incident out of public view now stood beneath the banners of a veterans fundraiser with his own access restricted. He looked toward the giant screen, still displaying the scholarship program, and seemed unable to accept that the technology he had relied on to conceal a mistake had preserved its evidence elsewhere.
As the small group began to disperse, Torres approached Vanessa. She spoke quietly enough that the nearest onlookers could not hear.
"Ms. Cole, based on what I've seen, there's no basis to continue a fraud investigation against you. No obstruction complaint will be filed on the facts presented. The mall's manager has also confirmed that the proposed trespass notice is withdrawn. I'd like you to give a full statement and have your wrists examined."
Vanessa looked down at the faint purple lines beginning to form around her skin. "I will. But first I need to make sure the files are secure."
