Then she asked Keisha, “What did you tell him?”

Vale frowned. “I just told you what she said.”

“I heard you,” Hannah replied. “I’m asking her now.”

Keisha repeated the facts.

Hannah checked the system.

The suite was occupied.

“I’m sorry we cannot provide the upgrade tonight, Mr. Vale,” Hannah said. “We can offer the room you booked or help you find comparable accommodation elsewhere.”

He stared at her. “Do you know who I know?”

Hannah thought of a soaked old man under a brass awning.

“Yes,” she said. “But that does not change who is already sleeping in the room you want.”

Vale left furious.

Two hours later, Samuel called.

Hannah saw his name on her phone and briefly wondered whether her management career had lasted three months.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Brooks.”

“I hear you sent Martin Vale away.”

“I offered him the room he booked.”

“He says you humiliated him.”

“I told him the occupied suite would remain occupied.”

Samuel was quiet.

Hannah continued. “If you want me to apologize for the tone, I can review the camera and do that if I was inappropriate. I’m not going to apologize for refusing to remove another guest because he knows a board member.”

A pause.

Then Samuel laughed.

“What?” Hannah asked.

“Nothing. Miriam already told him the same thing.”

“You called to scare me?”

“I called because he complained to me personally.”

“And?”

“And I wanted your version before deciding anything.”

The sentence was ordinary.

That was why it mattered.

Hannah leaned against the office wall.

“Thank you,” she said.

“For what?”

“For asking.”

Samuel understood immediately.

Holloway had rarely asked.

He announced, assumed, interpreted, and punished. The simple act of asking before deciding had become a symbol of everything the hotel was trying to rebuild.
