The space between twelve years and one moment vanished. Richard looked up with an irritated expression that froze before he could speak. Celeste saw the change on her husband's face and followed his gaze, and the champagne glass in her hand tilted enough to spill onto her pink dress. Daniel stood breathing hard, his shirt damp from running, the old matching watch visible beneath his cuff.

"Daniel?" Richard said. The name came out rough, as though he had not used it for years and his voice had forgotten how.

"Danny," Celeste whispered. She pressed a hand against her mouth, staring at the man she had last seen leaving their dining room with Grace's hand in his. He had grown older, a little broader through the shoulders, his hair touched with silver at the temples. None of those changes concealed the boy she remembered.

Daniel took a long breath. "Hello, Dad. Hello, Mom."

Richard set his phone down. For a moment he looked genuinely lost, which was so unlike him that Celeste nearly reached for his arm. "What are you doing here?" he asked.

"Trying to get to my daughters," Daniel answered.

Sloan, standing beside row one, glanced between the three adults. "I'm sorry," she said. "Do you know each other?"

Daniel turned toward her. "Where are Ruby and Pearl Bell?"

"As I explained, they're seated comfortably in twenty-six A and B," she replied. "We've taken special care of them."

"Those are their names," Daniel said. "Ruby and Pearl Bell. Two unaccompanied minors who were signed into your care with assigned seats two A and two B. You signed the paperwork. They had not asked to move, and I was never contacted. Yet you told the gate that the family had agreed."

The businessman in row three lowered his newspaper. Two passengers in row one looked over their shoulders, realizing this was not merely a late traveler making a fuss over an upgrade. Richard stared at Daniel, and confusion moved over his face as he tried to put the pieces together. Celeste's eyes filled before Daniel had finished speaking.

"Your daughters?" she asked. "The two little girls?"

"Yes. They're nine today."

Celeste reached up to touch her necklace again. "The little one in blue. The earrings. She said they came from her great-grandmother. Daniel, are those..."

"I named her Pearl after Grandma," he said. "Ruby is her twin sister. They have been alive nine years."

The truth arrived in stages. The earrings had not been a coincidence; the little girl's name was not something Celeste had overheard and misunderstood. Her own granddaughters had been sitting in the seats she and Richard occupied, and their father was the son they had allowed to disappear from their lives. Celeste looked down at the pink stain on her dress and began to cry without making a sound.
