"I know," Richard replied. "I won't ask you to pretend."

"And no gifts that come with conditions. No college accounts offered as compensation for a conversation. No approaching the girls without talking to Grace and me first."

Richard looked at the blue door and nodded. "All right. I can do that."

Daniel watched the older couple walk to their car. He had spent so long wishing his parents would come back that he had never examined what it might feel like if they actually did. Relief was there, but so were suspicion, grief, and a tired sadness for the younger man who had needed them when no invitation arrived. He did not try to force those feelings into a single answer.

Grace came to stand beside him. "How do you feel?" she asked.

"I don't know yet," Daniel admitted.

She slipped her hand into his. "That's all right. We have time."

And for the first time in twelve years, Daniel believed that whatever came next could happen at a pace chosen by him and Grace, rather than dictated by Richard Ashford's demands.

The following morning began with cereal, leftover cake, and two children who could not agree which part of their birthday had been most extraordinary. Ruby favored the moment Captain Ruiz told Sloan that the seats belonged to them; Pearl preferred seeing the necklace match her earrings. Daniel listened while making coffee and wondered how a day that had begun so badly could leave two such different memories in the same family.

Then his phone rang. It was a representative from Northstar Airlines' customer relations department, calling to confirm that an investigation had begun. The captain's report, Andre's seat-change history, Jenna's account, and the girls' paperwork had all been preserved. The representative asked whether Daniel would provide a written statement, and he agreed on the condition that the children's privacy be respected.

Over the next two weeks, the airline interviewed the crew and reviewed the relevant records. Captain Ruiz's report described both the unauthorized movement of unaccompanied minors and the false information provided to the gate. Andre acknowledged that he should have verified the purported family approval before changing the seats, even under time pressure. Jenna explained exactly what she had asked and what she had been told, including her own failure to insist on a proper answer sooner.

Evelyn Hart, the woman in the gray sweater, provided a statement describing the girls' distress and the way Sloan had removed their backpacks. Walter Finch mailed a handwritten account on lined paper, complete with a small drawing showing the position of the bathroom door in row twenty-six. He ended with a sentence Daniel kept afterward: The important part is that the children told the truth, and somebody finally made room to hear it.

Sloan was removed from her lead flight attendant assignment during the review and later received a three-week unpaid suspension under the terms of her employment agreement and applicable rules. She was required to complete retraining and demonstrate that she understood the special obligations involved in caring for unaccompanied minors. Her interview for the corporate training position was withdrawn because the review had revealed serious judgment problems directly related to the role she had wanted.
