At that moment the cockpit door opened. Captain Elena Ruiz stepped into the forward galley carrying a tablet. She was a veteran pilot with short gray hair and four gold stripes on each shoulder, and she had spent enough years in command to recognize when a problem had been made worse by someone trying to make it disappear. Andre had spoken to her over the cabin communication line, describing the seat change and his own mistake at the gate.
The captain reviewed the electronic seat record before leaving the cockpit. The original assignment showed two unaccompanied minors in 2A and 2B and their father connecting into 2C. The amended record showed the twins in the last row, a change approved by the lead flight attendant without a guardian's verified consent. The reason entered into the system was family request.
Captain Ruiz looked at that phrase for a long moment. A family request was the sort of note that could protect an employee from questions, provided nobody checked who the family was or what it had actually asked. On a flight involving children under the airline's care, such a discrepancy was not a matter of cabin convenience. It was a record that might be used to locate and protect those children if an emergency occurred.
She walked down the aisle, passing the Ashfords without stopping. Sloan followed her a few steps behind, already preparing the explanation she hoped would make the problem seem minor. When the captain reached row twenty-six, she saw Daniel kneeling near the girls and Jenna standing with the unaccompanied minor envelope pressed against her uniform.
"Mr. Bell?" she asked. "I'm Elena Ruiz, the captain. I'm sorry this has happened to your family. May I look at the paperwork, please?"
Jenna handed it to her. The captain read the front, checked the signatures, then turned her tablet so Jenna and Daniel could see the original and revised assignments. She spoke clearly enough for the nearby passengers to hear, but without performing for them.
"I have two children signed into our care in seats two A and two B," she said. "I have paperwork confirming those seats and a father ticketed in two C. But I found them in the last row with no written approval for the move. I need to know who authorized it."
Sloan approached quickly. "Captain, I can explain. We had an equipment change, and Mr. and Mrs. Ashford had been displaced. I thought it would be better for the children to remain together in the rear where Jenna could keep an eye on them. The family was comfortable with it."
Ruby straightened. Her face flushed, but she held on to the seat arm and looked at the captain. "We were not comfortable with it," she said. "We told her our daddy bought the seats, and she said there wasn't an adult to argue with."
Pearl nodded. "We were supposed to have our birthday with Daddy. We didn't ask to move."
