Sloan's smile twitched. "They're children, Captain. I was trying to make a reasonable decision in a complicated boarding situation."

"Then you should have documented it and consulted the people responsible for them," Captain Ruiz said. "Jenna, what did you understand about the change?"

Jenna swallowed. She could feel Sloan watching, but she remembered Pearl waiting outside a bathroom while adults treated her like an obstacle. "I was told the move had been approved," she said. "I asked who approved it. Sloan said she did and that she'd correct the paperwork later. When I asked about their father, she said nobody would check."

The woman in the gray sweater raised her hand from three rows ahead. "Captain, I'm Evelyn Hart. I watched the lead attendant pull their backpacks down and tell them to move. The girls did not ask to leave those seats. They looked terrified of arguing."

Walter Finch cleared his throat. "I wasn't there for the move, Captain, but I heard both girls explain it the same way before their father arrived. They didn't even know each other could tell the story with such precision. That's generally a useful sign."

A few passengers chuckled softly, and the captain gave Walter a brief nod. She was grateful for witnesses, but the children should never have needed strangers to make their words count. She looked back at Sloan and held up the envelope.

"You signed to accept responsibility for these girls," she said. "Then you told the gate their family requested a change they did not request. If an emergency required us to account for two unaccompanied children, the seating records and their custody paperwork would disagree. That is not a small adjustment."

Sloan pressed her lips together. "Captain, Mr. Ashford sits on our customer advisory board. He's a major client. I was trying to prevent an escalation."

"And you created a much more serious one," Captain Ruiz said. "I don't care whether he's an advisory board member or the owner of the airline. Two children in our care were moved improperly. We're correcting it."

She addressed Daniel and the twins. "Ruby and Pearl, I'm giving you your original seats back. Your dad will sit in two C, as booked. I'm sorry we didn't do this correctly the first time."

Ruby's face brightened with cautious relief. Pearl leaned against Daniel's arm and whispered that she really did need the bathroom before they left the gate. Captain Ruiz spoke briefly to Jenna, who arranged to let Pearl use the forward lavatory with a crew member accompanying her. It was a small practical correction, but Daniel noticed the difference between a person who listened and acted and a person who turned every need into a debate about authority.

"Sloan, you'll be relieved of lead responsibilities for the remainder of this flight," the captain continued. "Derek will take over the cabin team. I will submit a report to inflight management. You are not to alter the original documentation or discuss the incident with witnesses outside the normal reporting process."
