Margaret remained polite.
“I'd like a room.”
“I told you—”
“And I would also like to speak with the manager.”
Chloe stared.
Then reached for the phone.
“Derek, we have a problem at reception.”
Margaret almost admired the phrasing.
Not a guest needs assistance.
A problem.
Within five minutes, Derek Colton emerged from a corridor behind the desk.
Margaret had seen him before.
Twice.
Both times he wore tailored suits and a smile designed for boardrooms.
Now he wore the same suit with a different face.
He looked Margaret over before speaking.
“What is this?”
Chloe answered while Margaret stood three feet away.
“She refuses to leave. She's upsetting the guests.”
Margaret glanced around.
Nobody appeared particularly upset.
Derek faced her.
“Ma'am, you've been informed we're unable to accommodate you.”
“Your receptionist told me the hotel was full.”
“It is.”
“She then checked another guest into his usual suite.”
Derek looked at Chloe.
Only briefly.
Then back at Margaret.
“You're dripping water across the marble.”
Margaret looked down.
“Yes. It is raining.”
“This is a luxury property.”
“I noticed.”
“We maintain certain standards.”
“So do I.”
Derek's eyes narrowed.
Margaret continued.
“I can pay for a room.”
