Alicia noticed. She told me the engagement numbers were less explosive but more useful than she expected, and she asked whether we might develop a short series around repairs and durability. I agreed, privately aware of the irony. My professional life had taught me to amplify dissatisfaction until ordinary things looked inadequate. Now I was learning how much value existed in care that was difficult to photograph but easy to live with.

Around the same time, Kendra invited me to help her sort donated coats for a winter drive at the hospital. She had been organizing it for years, and I had always meant to join her but seldom made the time. We spent a Saturday morning checking sizes, washing the items that needed cleaning, and matching gloves into pairs. The work was repetitive and lacked any dramatic reward, which made it unexpectedly restful. Nobody asked us to film ourselves helping; the coats simply needed to be ready before the cold weather arrived.

At lunch I asked Kendra whether she thought Donovan would ever forgive me. She reminded me gently that we had agreed not to make every conversation about the breakup. I apologized and asked how her own life was going. She told me about the new respiratory-therapy supervisor who had improved the hospital's scheduling and about her younger brother's difficulty finding an apartment. I realized how narrowly I had been listening to other people for months, using their experiences chiefly as mirrors for my own fear.

"I'm not telling you to stop missing him," Kendra said when she saw me grow quiet. "I'm telling you that your life needs to be more than waiting for somebody to decide whether to come back." She handed me a pair of gloves that had been mismatched. "See if you can find the other blue one. That's something you can actually do right now." I laughed for the first time in days, and the smallness of the task helped.

My mother came over in the middle of October, bringing a container of stew and insisting that my refrigerator looked too empty. She had noticed that I no longer mentioned Donovan. I told her we were no longer together and, when she pressed for an explanation, admitted that I had lied about wanting to break up to see how he would react. She put the stew down on the counter and sat in silence for so long that I worried she was more disappointed than angry.

"You did what?" she finally asked. I told her again, adding nothing to make the story kinder to me. Denise stared at the wall, then pressed two fingers against her forehead. "Honey, why would you gamble with something you loved?" I began to cry and told her I had wanted to know he would fight for me. She looked as though I had described an accident she recognized from a distance.
