wanted to admit the sauce had become bitter. He sat beside me on the sofa while we watched an old mystery movie, and midway through I fell asleep with my head on his chest. I woke to find that he had turned the volume down and draped a blanket over my legs.

On Sunday morning we made pancakes. Donovan drew a terrible face in blueberries on mine, and I told him he had used up the artistic ability allotted to his family. He laughed and reminded me that Zoe had once painted a portrait of him that resembled a startled horse. Later he checked the loose cabinet hinge again, tightening one screw with the small screwdriver he kept in his truck. Before leaving that night, he kissed my forehead and said he would come by after work on Tuesday.

There was no argument to resolve, no betrayal to confront, and no real reason to question whether we loved each other. That was precisely why I chose Tuesday. I believed the absence of a problem would make his reaction a purer measurement of his feelings. I thought he would be so astonished by the possibility of losing me that his devotion would finally burst out in a form nobody could mistake. I gave more thought to how I would tell the story later than to what the experience might actually feel like for him.

On Monday night, I stood in my bathroom practicing. My mirror was fogged from a hot shower, and I wiped a clear circle in the glass so I could see my face. "Donovan, I've been thinking about us," I said, trying to sound heartbroken but certain. Then I tried again, softening the last sentence, tilting my head as though grief had made me gentle. I was not rehearsing honesty; I was directing an emotional performance in which the other person had never agreed to participate.

I deleted a draft message that would have warned him I wanted to discuss something serious. Warning him would have given him time to prepare, and I wanted a spontaneous reaction. I chose clothes that looked casual but flattering, bought sparkling water he liked, and cleaned the living room because I could not bear the idea of this decisive moment happening among dirty dishes. Those preparations now embarrass me more than almost anything else. I was arranging a stage on which I intended to wound someone and then judge the shape of his pain.

Tuesday was warm for September. At work I had a presentation on seasonal product photography, and afterward I spent twenty minutes watching the breakup video again in the bathroom. I tried to imagine Donovan refusing to leave, dropping to one knee, or telling me that the rest of his life had no meaning without me. The scenes grew so exaggerated that they resembled the advertisements I wrote for a living. I did not recognize how little they resembled Donovan, who rarely spoke in absolutes and never made promises he could not keep.
