"Do you want me to tell you something?" I asked. Donovan turned toward me. "Always," he said, then laughed at himself. "Unless it's that you want to break up to see what I do. I think we've both had enough of that." The joke startled me, and for a moment I did not know whether it was safe to laugh. Then I saw his expression, open and gentle, and understood that he was making room for the past without giving it control of the present.

I told him I had once believed he needed to chase me to prove that I mattered. "I think I was waiting for someone to repair the feeling my father left behind," I said. "I wanted you to be so terrified of losing me that I could stop being terrified of being left. I didn't understand that your fear could never fix mine." Donovan listened, his hand resting loosely on the floor between us.

"I wasn't going to beg you to stay," he said. "Not because I didn't want you. Because I wanted you to be free to choose me." I took his hand, feeling the familiar warmth of his fingers. He continued, "I still want that. I want you here because you mean it, not because we scared each other into staying." I told him I was there because I meant it, and that I would tell him honestly if my feelings ever changed, even if it was difficult.

We sat together until the sounds from the bakery downstairs faded and the street grew quiet. The kitchen cabinet still squeaked when I opened it, and Donovan offered to repair it the next day. I said I might try first, and he smiled as though that was a perfectly good idea. In the morning, when we made coffee surrounded by boxes, I found a screwdriver and tightened the hinge while he held the cabinet door steady. We both laughed when the squeak disappeared.

Our lives did not become free of anxiety, conflict, or disappointment after that. I still occasionally felt the urge to interpret a delayed message as rejection. Donovan still sometimes struggled to express difficult feelings before they hardened into silence. We noticed those habits, spoke about them, and returned to the work whenever we failed to get it right the first time. The promise we made was not that love would spare us every uncomfortable emotion; it was that we would not turn those emotions into traps.

A few months after moving in, Donovan found the photograph of the brass key while we were organizing pictures on my laptop. He recognized the tag immediately and went quiet. I asked whether he wanted me to delete it. He shook his head and said the photograph was part of our history, even if it was a painful part. We sat together for a while, remembering that September evening without trying to make it into a romantic turning point that had been necessary all along.
