“You were right.”

“I wanted the feeling of being chosen by him while still having you waiting at home.”

“I didn’t think of it that way until you were gone.”

I stopped the voicemail.

Then restarted it.

Not because I enjoyed hearing her suffer.

Because for the first time she was describing the situation without treating my reaction as the central problem.

She continued.

“I don’t know why I did it.”

“Maybe because things with us felt settled and I started confusing settled with boring.”

“That sounds horrible.”

“I know.”

“You were going to propose.”

Her voice broke.

“I didn’t know.”

“I keep thinking about that.”

“If I had known—”

I stopped the message again.

That sentence hurt.

If I had known.

But she was not supposed to respect me because she knew a ring was waiting.

The relationship was supposed to matter before the reward was visible.

I finished listening.

“I’m sorry,” she said at the end.

“Not because Jason turned out to be exactly who I told you he was.”

“Not because you canceled the ring.”

“I’m sorry because I understand why you looked at me differently.”

“I wish I could undo it.”

“Please call me.”

I saved the voicemail for a day.

Then deleted it.

Not as evidence against her.

I did not need a prosecution file.

The relationship was over.

A week later, Sarah called.

Sarah and Chloe had been close since college.

I never hated her.

But I never entirely trusted her either.

She had a habit of turning every relationship problem into a referendum on whether a woman was “living for herself,” even when the actual issue was simply whether somebody had behaved badly.

Her number appeared while I was unpacking books in Mike’s spare room.

I answered because I thought there might be an emergency.

“Mark?”

“Hi, Sarah.”

Her voice was sweet.

Too sweet.

“I just wanted to check on you.”

“I’m okay.”

“Are you?”

“Yes.”

She sighed.

“Chloe isn’t.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

“She’s barely sleeping.”

I said nothing.

“She knows she messed up.”

“Okay.”

“She really does.”

“Okay.”

Sarah became frustrated with my lack of movement.

“You guys were talking about marriage.”

“Yes.”

“You were literally going to propose.”

“Yes.”

“Then how can you just turn it off?”

“I didn’t.”

She paused.

“What?”

“I didn’t turn anything off.”

“I’m hurt.”

“I’m disappointed.”

“I miss parts of my life.”

“I still wake up sometimes expecting her to be next to me.”

“That doesn’t mean I should go back.”

Sarah softened.

“Then maybe talk to her.”

“We talked.”

“In a parking lot while you were angry.”

“I wasn’t angry.”

“That’s almost worse.”

I smiled despite myself.

Sarah continued.

“She made one mistake.”
