“You got the money back?”

“Most of it.”

Her eyes filled with something between panic and rage.

“You did all of that without talking to me?”

I almost could not believe it.

“You left to meet Jason after telling me I wasn’t welcome.”

“You’re upset I made a decision without consulting you?”

“That’s different.”

“Why?”

“Because this is our future.”

“It was.”

The word hurt both of us.

Chloe looked down.

For the first time, anger left her face.

“Nothing happened.”

I waited.

“With Jason.”

“Nothing happened.”

“I didn’t ask.”

“He didn’t touch me.”

“I didn’t ask.”

“We talked.”

“We had drinks after coffee.”

“He wanted to go somewhere else.”

“I said no.”

I kept my voice calm.

“This isn’t an infidelity trial.”

“Then why are you leaving?”

“Because I don’t need you to sleep with someone else before I’m allowed to decide I don’t like how I’m being treated.”

She stared.

I continued.

“Maybe you did nothing physical.”

“I believe you.”

“That isn’t the whole standard.”

Her eyes filled.

“So that’s it?”

“Yes.”

“You’re throwing away almost four years.”

“No.”

“I’m ending something that changed this morning.”

“That’s not the same.”

Her sadness transformed rapidly into anger.

“That is such a coward’s answer.”

I said nothing.

“You’re scared.”

“No.”

“You are.”

“You cannot handle me having independence.”

“You need everything safe and predictable.”

“You were going to trap me into some boring little marriage and now you’re punishing me because I reminded you I’m still my own person.”

That one landed.

Not because it was true.

Because a few hours earlier, I had been excited to offer her exactly the future she was now describing with contempt.

I let the hurt pass through me.

Then said:

“The future you’re talking about ended when you told me I wasn’t invited into yours.”

She stared.

I opened my car door.

“Goodbye, Chloe.”

“Mark.”

I got in.

She slapped her palm lightly against the roof.

“Don’t do this.”

I looked at her through the open window.

“I already did.”

Then I drove away.

The first forty-eight hours were quieter than I expected.

I thought grief would be loud.

Instead it was logistical.

Hotel breakfast.

Work.

Apartment listings.

Changing mailing addresses.

Calling my parents and giving them a simplified version.

Telling my mother three separate times that no, she should not contact Chloe.

Messaging Mike, my oldest friend, and asking whether he could store three boxes in his garage.

His response came almost instantly.

Sure. Why?

Long story.

Breakup?

How did you know?

You asked me for storage. Nobody happy asks me for storage.
