I read it.

Then folded it and placed it back.

Maybe someday it would hurt her.

Maybe comfort her.

Maybe mean nothing.

It no longer belonged to my next chapter.

I left the apartment at 1:47.

I drove to a hotel across town.

Nothing nice.

A clean business hotel beside an office park.

The room smelled faintly of disinfectant and air conditioning.

Perfect.

No memories.

I carried in my suitcase and one box.

The rest stayed locked in my car.

I sat on the edge of the bed.

For the first time since Chloe left, I had nothing practical to do.

That was when the emotions caught up.

My hands shook.

I put my face in them.

I did not cry gracefully.

There was no dignified single tear.

I cried because I loved her.

I cried because that morning I had expected to become engaged.

I cried because part of me wanted to call and tell her to come home.

I cried because another part of me knew if I did, I would spend years wondering why I had abandoned my own boundary the moment it became painful.

Eventually the wave passed.

I took a shower.

Then I drove back to the apartment.

Not to wait for Chloe.

I had forgotten toiletries, several work documents, and the spare key to my parents’ house.

I also wanted to leave my apartment key inside.

I was carrying the final box to the car when Chloe returned.

It was after six.

The sun had dropped behind the buildings, leaving the parking lot under that bluish evening light before street lamps fully take over.

I was leaning against my car, adjusting the box on the passenger seat, when her sedan pulled in.

She parked three spaces away.

For a few seconds she did not see me.

She got out slowly.

There was a slight looseness in her movements.

Not drunk.

But she had clearly consumed something stronger than coffee.

Her cheeks were flushed.

She looked distracted.

She was smiling at her phone.

Then she looked up.

The smile disappeared.

Her eyes moved from me to the packed back seat.

“What’s going on?”

I closed the passenger door.

She approached.

“Mark?”

I held the apartment key in one hand.

“How was coffee?”

The question stopped her.

“What?”

“How was coffee?”

She stared at me as though trying to identify a hidden trap.

“It was good.”

I nodded.

“Okay.”

She looked through the car window.

“Why are your things in there?”

“We’re done.”

For a moment, she genuinely did not understand.

Then she laughed.

A short, disbelieving sound.

“What?”

“We’re done.”

“You’re breaking up with me?”

“Yes.”

“Because I had coffee?”

“No.”

Her eyebrows rose.

“Then what?”

“Because of how you treated our relationship before you left.”

Her expression hardened.

“Oh my God.”

“Chloe—”

“No. Seriously.”

She looked around the parking lot as though hoping someone else could confirm how unreasonable I was being.

“You’re doing all this because I said you weren’t invited?”
