I sat down. The words were direct, without accusation, and somehow that made them worse. I forwarded Lauren's confirmation, along with a short explanation that I had not witnessed anything beyond what she had stated herself. Nora replied, "Thank you for telling me. I'm going to call him. Please take care of yourself."

I felt no victory. On the other end of the message was a woman whose Friday night had just been split in two, a person I had never met and had no reason to harm. For a few minutes I considered whether I should apologize again for contacting her. Then I put the phone down. Nora did not need me to manage her feelings or ask her to reassure me that I had done the right thing.

Midnight approached. From the living room I could hear Caleb and Priya turning off lights and moving quietly through the house. Grace knocked once, said she would be sleeping on the couch, and told me I could wake her if I needed anything. I thanked her through the door. I had expected a night of celebration, laughter, and anticipation, perhaps one last nervous conversation with my best friend before the wedding. Instead, I lay in a stranger's guest bed listening to a ceiling fan and knowing that somewhere across the city Lauren was with Alex.

What I did not yet know was that Nora had already begun trying to reach him. And that as she made those calls, the carefully arranged version of the evening that Lauren and Alex had built for themselves was beginning to collapse.

Lauren later told me the night turned strange just after midnight. I cannot describe the room from memory because I wasn't there, and I have no interest in inventing details about what happened behind a door I never opened. What I know came from messages, from a conversation with Nora two days later, and from Lauren's own account when she tried to persuade me to take her back. Those accounts disagreed on several things, but they agreed on the moment everything changed. Lauren was sitting beside Alex when the notifications began arriving, and for several seconds she believed they were simply wedding guests sending last-minute good wishes.

The first was from Tara. "Ethan cancelled everything. Is this real? Call me."

Then came a message from her mother, followed by three missed calls from her father and an email from the invitation service announcing that the ceremony and reception would not take place. A dozen relatives asked whether she was all right. Someone wanted to know whether they should still bring their gift. Lauren told me later that she felt her stomach drop when she saw the words "EVENT CANCELLED" across the confirmation email, because until then she had assumed I was angry but would not dare interrupt a wedding with so many people already involved.

Then she saw my message. I had sent it only after Rachel confirmed the guest notices were going out, and I kept it short because long messages give people places to hide.
