"You asked me to be generous," I said. "What exactly did you think generosity meant?"

Her eyes met mine. "I thought it meant you trusted me enough not to make a big thing out of one last goodbye."

"Did you ask Alex to be generous to Nora? Did you think about her when you made the plan?"

Lauren looked away. "He said they were ending things."

"But you knew he was married."

"I believed him."

"You wanted me to accept what I could see, while you accepted from him what you couldn't verify."

She nodded once, crying now. I didn't enjoy being right. Every admission made the apartment we had shared feel farther away, as if an unseen hand were moving my life to the other side of a room I could no longer cross. I thought of all the times I had defended her friendship with Alex to people who asked whether it bothered me. I had been proud of my trust. Now I had to learn the difference between trust and the decision to ignore my own discomfort for fear of seeming controlling.

"What happened Friday night?" I asked.

"We went to a hotel lounge," she said. "He had a room reserved. We talked. I thought we knew what was going to happen, but then the messages came, and everything exploded."

"Did you sleep with him?"

She shook her head. "No. Nora called before we went upstairs."

I watched her carefully. I had no way to verify that answer, and I decided I did not need to. I could choose to believe her and still not marry her. The planned betrayal was real even if the physical act had been interrupted. The months of concealed emotional intimacy were real regardless of what happened after midnight in a hotel.

"Ethan, I swear nothing happened," she repeated.

"I heard you," I said. "But you're asking the wrong question. You're trying to convince me the thing you announced was harmless because something prevented you from finishing it. I can't build a marriage on that distinction."

She leaned forward. "I was scared. Marriage felt permanent, and Alex made me think about the version of my life that might have been. I thought I could choose you with a clear head if I spent one last night closing that door."

"You could have closed it by telling him you were getting married and ending the private conversations."

"I know that now."

"And you could have chosen not to marry me until you were certain. I would have hated that. It would have hurt. But I could have respected it."

Lauren covered her face. I let her cry without reaching across the table, and the restraint was one of the hardest things I did that morning. Our bodies remembered a relationship that our decisions had already ended. I could still picture the shape of my hand resting over hers. I could also hear her telling me that if I objected to her spending the night with Alex, I was making the problem about control.
