For the first time, I understood that protecting a future sometimes begins with refusing to perform the past one more time.

Robert and Elaine arrived just before ten. Caleb opened the door, and I could see from the kitchen that neither of them had slept. Elaine carried a paper bag containing pastries from the bakery Lauren had loved since childhood, a reflexive offering she had probably purchased because she couldn't bear to arrive empty-handed. Robert held his keys in one hand and a folded sheet of paper in the other. When he saw me, he looked suddenly older than he had the previous week, as if something had been taken out of the middle of his face and replaced with exhaustion.

"Ethan," he said. That was all he managed before his voice failed.

I stood up, and he came across the room to embrace me. He was not a man who hugged easily, which made the gesture harder to bear. Elaine put the pastries on the table and took my hands. She said she was sorry, and I told her she didn't need to apologize for someone else's decision. She shook her head and said there were things parents carried anyway, whether they were responsible for them or not.

We sat around Caleb's kitchen table while Priya made fresh coffee. Robert asked me if I had been pressured, threatened, or asked to keep anything quiet for the family's sake. I told him no. He showed me the folded paper, which turned out to be a list of payments he and Elaine had made toward the wedding. He wanted me to know they would cover any nonrefundable cost assigned to them and would not expect me to refund money they had spent voluntarily.

"I didn't come to talk about money," I said.

"I know," Robert replied. "But I've watched people hurt each other worse while arguing over the money after something like this. I'm not going to let that happen if I can help it."

Elaine folded her hands. "She came home early this morning. She was crying. We talked until almost five."

I waited. I did not want to ask for details I might spend years wishing I hadn't heard. Elaine seemed to understand and continued only after deciding what I needed to know. Lauren had admitted that she went to meet Alex and that she expected to return before the wedding as though nothing fundamental had changed. She had said she believed I would eventually recognize her decision as a form of honesty. Then she learned Alex had misled her about his marriage, and the argument that followed made her understand how little control she actually had over the situation she had created.

"Did she tell you she thought I would accept it?" I asked.

Elaine looked down at the table. "Yes. She said you were steady, that you always came back after disagreements, that you wouldn't let one mistake ruin everything."
