was managing the registration table when the printer failed and a line formed behind a stack of nametags. She looked at me, noticed the extension cord sticking out of my laptop bag, and asked if I could save her event from disaster. I fixed a loose connection, she called me her hero for the evening, and we spent the rest of the event trading jokes over lukewarm coffee.

She was funny, intelligent, and generous in ways that mattered when no one important was watching. She remembered the names of children at the center where she worked, and when one boy struggled with reading she stayed late three times a week to help him without telling his parents the extra hours were unpaid. On our third date, we walked through a botanical garden in the rain because she insisted the flowers looked more interesting when everything else was gray. She kissed me beneath the awning of a locked greenhouse. I drove home thinking I had met someone who made ordinary life feel larger.

For most of our first year, we were happy in ways that did not require explanation. We cooked together on Sundays, explored small towns when work left us a free weekend, and argued over whether the windows in our first apartment should stay open through October. When Grace lost a student in a car accident and came to dinner too exhausted to speak, Lauren prepared food, sat beside her for hours, and never demanded gratitude. That was the woman I fell in love with. Remembering her kindness did not excuse what happened later, but it made the loss more complicated than a story about a villain and a victim.

Alex entered our life gradually. Lauren mentioned him during a conversation about college friends, saying they had dated when they were younger and eventually recognized that they wanted different futures. At first she spoke about him in the detached voice people use for old apartments or jobs they once held. Then he began appearing in social media photographs from group dinners. A few months later, she said they had exchanged messages after his mother's surgery, and I told her I hoped his family was doing well.

One evening, a year before our engagement, I asked why he was still such a regular presence in her life. She told me that the friendship had survived the romance and that she hoped I was secure enough not to feel threatened by it. I said I didn't mind a friendship, but I wanted openness about where it stood. She agreed immediately and kissed me, ending the conversation before I could tell whether we had actually established the same meaning for the word openness. Looking back, I could see that we had a habit of ending difficult discussions as soon as one of us sounded reassured, even if nothing had been resolved.
