I took screenshots because the messages were beginning to cross from concern into harassment, then silenced the notifications. I wasn't interested in posting the exchange or recruiting another group of people to tell me I was right. Every new accusation tempted me to write a paragraph defending myself, and every paragraph would have given them another angle to argue. I reminded myself that a boundary didn't become illegitimate because the people on the other side disliked it.

By Sunday evening, strangers in their wider circle had begun repeating fragments of the story. A friend of Finn's sent me a message asking whether I'd really abandoned Marissa with all our bills, and someone from Khloe's office suggested I was punishing her for having an independent life. Neither claim was true, and I could feel the familiar urge to collect receipts and present a defense. Instead, I forwarded the lease correspondence to Marissa with one factual note confirming that I would meet my obligations until the landlord approved a change.

Her answer arrived in seconds. "So you'll pay rent but you won't even talk to me?" she wrote. "Do you understand how cold that is?"

I typed, "I understand you're hurting. I'm not going to reopen the breakup, but I will handle our shared responsibilities fairly." I read it twice before sending, making sure there was nothing that could be mistaken for an invitation to negotiate the relationship. She responded with a string of messages explaining how hurt she was, and I put the phone face down while I unpacked my plates.

The next day at work, I struggled to concentrate during a meeting about a project deadline. I worked as an operations analyst, a job that usually suited me because it involved finding patterns in messy information and helping people make better decisions. That morning I couldn't hold a single spreadsheet in my head for more than ten minutes. My coworker Priya noticed I was quieter than usual and asked whether something was wrong.

I told her I'd just moved out after a breakup. She didn't ask who was at fault or try to offer an instant solution. She said she'd gone through something similar and that the first week after moving was often more exhausting than people expected. Then she asked whether I wanted her to handle one call so I could finish my report without falling behind.

That simple offer almost made me cry. It required no proof of what I'd been through and no promise that I'd repay it by becoming part of her plans. I thanked her, finished the report, and went home earlier than I would have otherwise. I was unlocking my building's front door when I heard somebody call my name from across the sidewalk.

Marissa stood near the entrance with Khloe, Adrien, Tasha, and Finn arranged behind her. For a moment I genuinely thought I'd imagined the scene, because it looked too theatrical to be real. Marissa stepped forward immediately, her face tight with anger and fatigue. "We need to settle this right now," she said, loud enough that two people passing with grocery bags turned to look.
