The first six months were the kind people describe when they say they fell in love without noticing the moment it happened. We ate noodles from cartons on my living room floor while an old movie played in the background, took long walks after dinner, and learned the strange small details that make another person feel familiar. Marissa could not fall asleep if a closet door was left open, and she insisted that grocery shopping was better with a playlist. I made terrible pancakes but good scrambled eggs, and she told me that counted as balance.

She also made room for me in ways that felt generous at the time. When I had a long night of coursework, she'd stop by with a sandwich and sit beside me without expecting entertainment. When her car battery died, I met her in a parking lot with jumper cables, and we spent the wait talking about the places we'd like to visit when we could afford more than a weekend away. I never thought our relationship should consume either of us. I had my friends, my studies, and a family that still called on Sunday afternoons, and I wanted her to have the same freedom.

Her friend group came with a name, though I assumed everybody was joking when I first heard it. The squad consisted of Khloe, Adrien, Tasha, and Finn, plus Marissa, and they referred to themselves as one unit with the seriousness other people reserved for families or sports teams. Their group chat ran from breakfast to bedtime, with sudden votes on brunch locations and lengthy debates about who had reacted to whose story. They had matching Halloween costumes, a yearly beach weekend, a photo album titled 'The Originals,' and an impressive ability to make an ordinary Thursday into an event requiring twenty messages.

At first, the noise was funny. I learned that Khloe was bold and impatient, the first to suggest a plan and the first to complain when nobody answered quickly enough. Adrien was the calmer one, usually the person trying to find a reservation that suited everybody's budget. Tasha organized birthdays as if she were producing an awards show, while Finn specialized in last-minute invitations and emotional emergencies that apparently could not survive until morning.

When I was introduced, they were friendly enough. Khloe asked questions about my program, Adrien shook my hand and offered me a beer, and Tasha photographed Marissa leaning against my shoulder before I had learned everybody's names. Finn joked that I would have to pass a probationary period before they trusted me with their favorite restaurants. I laughed because it sounded like a joke, and because I was grateful that Marissa wanted her friends and her boyfriend to know each other.

The trouble developed so slowly that I spent months finding nicer names for it. A dinner we planned for ourselves became a group dinner because somebody else was bored. An afternoon at a museum became an impromptu photo shoot when Khloe called from two blocks away. If we were watching a movie at home, Marissa would pause it to answer a voice note, then forget what scene we were on while she composed a reply.
