"I know that."

"Do you?"

Helen raised one hand slightly.

"Ryan, don't answer quickly."

He looked down.

For perhaps thirty seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he said, "I think I got used to thinking of my work as the important work."

It was the most honest thing I had heard from him in months.

In the second session, Helen asked about Ashley.

Ryan described the affair as something that "just happened."

Helen asked him to walk backward through the decisions.

He had texted Ashley first.

He had concealed the messages.

He had told her he was separating.

He had booked hotel rooms.

He had lied about trips.

He had purchased gifts.

He had booked Cancun.

By the time he finished, the phrase just happened sounded absurd even to him.

"I didn't wake up and decide to destroy my marriage," he said.

"Most people don't," Helen replied. "They make smaller decisions that require less courage than one big honest decision, and eventually the accumulation becomes a life."

I wrote that sentence down after the session.

The third appointment was the one that ended any possibility of reconciliation.

Not because Ryan said something cruel.

Because he said something revealing.

Helen asked what he feared most about divorce.

Ryan answered, "Losing Valerie."

Helen waited.

Then she said, "What else?"

He looked uncomfortable.

"Losing the house. Losing half of what I built. People finding out. My parents knowing. My employees knowing."

There it was.

I was on the list.

So was the house.

So was reputation.

So was money.

I did not expect to be the only thing he feared losing. But hearing the list clarified what I had felt for years. Ryan had slowly converted our marriage from a relationship into part of the architecture of his success.

Wife. House. Company. Watch. Vacations. Everything arranged correctly around the image of a man who had won.

The affair had not only risked me.

It had risked the picture.
