Lena's mouth tightened.

"Do you need to come off the trip? I can call the gate. We haven't closed yet."

It was a reasonable suggestion. Crew members were human. Emotional distress could affect safety judgment, and no airline wanted a lead attendant working a flight while in the middle of a personal crisis.

I looked toward the cockpit door.

For one moment, I considered it.

Then I shook my head.

"I'm fit for duty. But I need Captain Reynolds to know there's a personal situation in first class in case he tries to confront me."

Lena nodded immediately.

That was the difference between real professionalism and pretending not to feel anything. Professionalism did not mean I had to prove I was indestructible. It meant recognizing what could interfere with the job and putting safeguards in place before it did.

I stepped into the cockpit while the last few passengers boarded.

Captain Tom Reynolds had flown with me for years. He was in his late fifties, patient, unflappable, and more interested in a safe flight than in anyone's personal drama.

"Everything good?" he asked without turning from his paperwork.

"Operationally, yes," I said. "Personally, I need you aware of something. My husband is in 2A. He's traveling with a woman who is not me. He was not expecting me on the flight."

Tom finally looked up.

First at me.

Then past me toward the cabin.

"Do you want off?"

"No. I'm steady. Lena knows. If he becomes disruptive or tries to pull me into a personal argument, I will treat him like any other passenger."

Tom studied my face for two seconds longer than necessary.

"And if you stop being steady?"

"I'll tell you."

He nodded.

"That's all I need."

I returned to the cabin.

The aircraft door closed three minutes later.

Ryan had spent those three minutes staring at his phone.

Ashley had spent them staring at him.

The body language between them had changed completely.

When they boarded, she had touched him constantly: hand around his arm, shoulder brushing his, fingers lightly against his back. Now she sat angled away from him in 2B, arms folded, face rigid.

I began the safety demonstration.

There are moments in life so absurd that some distant part of your mind tries to laugh even while the rest of you is breaking. Standing in front of my husband and his mistress, demonstrating how to fasten a seat belt while explaining that in the event of an emergency everyone should remain calm, was one of them.

Ryan watched me throughout the entire demonstration.

Ashley did not look up once.

We pushed back from the gate at 3:42 p.m.

As the aircraft taxied, I took the jump seat opposite the first-class cabin. Ryan sat directly in my line of sight. He leaned toward Ashley and whispered something.

She pulled away.

He tried again.

She held up one hand without looking at him.

For the first time all day, I felt something other than pain.

Not satisfaction.

Clarity.
