"Why?"
"We don't know."
"Who had authority to mark it that way?"
"Morrison."
"Did the chief know?"
"Unknown."
Tanya looked toward the hallway.
The boys were still asleep.
"Independent counsel?"
"Already contacted."
"Good."
"There's more."
Malcolm hesitated.
"The recording starts before Hayes reached the boys."
Tanya knew what that meant.
"Patricia."
"Yes."
"What did she say?"
"You should hear it yourself."
Tanya dressed, made coffee, and listened in Malcolm's office at 8:30.
The body-camera image shook slightly as Hayes left his cruiser.
Patricia walked toward him.
Her voice was clear.
"Thank you for coming so fast. Those two have been here for over thirty minutes."
Hayes asked, "You saw them taking property?"
"They've been moving things around. I watched them come out, but I wanted to make sure you could catch them in the act."
Tanya stopped breathing for a moment.
Hayes said, "You saw them exit the residence?"
"Yes, but they don't live there. I know everyone here."
"How do you know?"
Patricia paused.
"Because the family that lives there doesn't have children who look like that."
The audio continued.
Hayes gave no challenge.
No clarification.
No question about what "look like that" meant.
He walked directly toward the twins.
Tanya removed one earbud.
"Play the rest."
Malcolm looked at her.
"There's another exchange after Hayes returns toward the cruiser."
They continued.
After Tanya arrived, after the boys were released, the camera caught Hayes near Patricia at the curb.
Patricia's voice dropped.
"Officer, I need to be direct. Those boys don't belong here. I don't mean just that house. I mean this neighborhood."
"Their kind doesn't belong in Riverside Oaks," she continued. "We have worked too hard to maintain certain standards. If this keeps happening, property values suffer."
Hayes said, "I understand."
Patricia continued.
"I've called before about that family and nothing gets done. I need this to be uncomfortable enough that they think twice about staying."
A car passed, briefly masking audio.
Then Hayes said, "You need to handle HOA issues through the HOA."
Patricia replied, "The HOA route isn't working."
Tanya stopped the video.
Her hand remained on the laptop trackpad.
For weeks, people had debated whether Patricia misunderstood what she saw.
There was no misunderstanding in that recording.
