"No."
His voice cracked.
He turned and went back to his room.
Tanya followed after a minute.
"Can I come in?"
No answer.
She opened the door slowly.
Julian lay facing the wall.
Tanya sat on the edge of his bed.
"Talk to me."
"I don't want to go outside."
"You don't have to today."
"Ever."
Tanya's throat tightened.
"This is your home."
"People watch us."
"Most people aren't Patricia."
"But one person called the police and they came."
Tanya had no argument.
Julian rolled over.
His eyes were red.
"What if she calls again?"
"She won't be allowed to keep doing this without consequences."
"What if somebody else does?"
"Then we handle it."
"What if you're not home?"
Tanya reached for his hand.
"Jordan knows how to call me. You know how to call me. You can go inside. You can call 911 if you're actually in danger."
Julian shook his head.
"What if the police don't believe us?"
That question was worse because Tanya could not promise belief.
"Then you stay calm, tell the truth, and ask for me."
Julian stared at the ceiling.
"You're important."
"My job is important."
"They still didn't believe us until you came."
Tanya squeezed his hand.
He whispered, "If they don't believe you, why would they believe me?"
Then, after a long silence, he asked the question Tanya would remember for the rest of her life.
"Mom, can I be white?"
Tanya's breath caught.
Julian kept going because once the sentence started, he could not stop it.
"If I was white, she would have believed I lived here. The police would have believed me. I hate that people see me and think I'm bad. I didn't do anything."
Tanya pulled him toward her.
His body shook against her chest.
"Listen to me," she whispered. "There is nothing wrong with being Black. Nothing wrong with you. The wrong thing happened in the way adults looked at you. You do not have to become somebody else to deserve safety."
Julian cried harder.
Tanya held him until his breathing slowed.
She did not tell him the world would always be fair.
She did not promise police would always get it right.
She promised something smaller.
"I will not pretend this was okay just to make other people comfortable."
Julian finally looked at her.
"What are you going to do?"
Tanya thought of the body-camera recording.
The hidden request log.
