She had articulated a goal.

Make the Davis family uncomfortable enough to leave.

Tanya played the clip again.

Not because she doubted it.

Because she wanted every word fixed in memory before emotion tried to simplify it.

Malcolm sat across from her.

"This changes the legal posture."

"For Patricia?"

"Potentially. False-report investigation. Harassment pattern. Bias motive. The exact criminal theory depends on state law and prosecutorial judgment."

"For Hayes?"

"The response to her statement will be part of the independent review."

"And Morrison?"

"Possible record interference or improper withholding. We need intent before we characterize it."

Tanya leaned back.

"Send the full file to independent counsel, internal affairs, and the district attorney's intake unit."

"Already prepared."

"Good."

"And Tanya?"

She looked at him.

"Do not listen to this alone again today."

She almost said she was fine.

Instead, she nodded.

That afternoon, Jordan sat at the kitchen table pushing cereal around a bowl even though it was almost noon.

School was out for winter break.

He should have been relieved.

Instead he looked tired.

"Kids saw more videos," he said.

Tanya poured coffee she did not need.

"I know."

"I told Nate it was a misunderstanding."

She waited.

"But it wasn't."

"No."

"She watched us."

"Yes."

"She knew."

Tanya sat across from him.

"Yes."

Jordan's eyes filled.

"Then why did she do it?"

Tanya could not give him the adult version without burdening him further.

She chose the truth that belonged to his age.

"Because she decided something about you before she cared who you actually were."

"Because we're Black."

Tanya did not look away.

"Yes."

Jordan wiped his face angrily.

"That's stupid."

"It is."

"Then why do adults keep doing it?"

"Because being older does not automatically make somebody wiser."

Julian appeared in the doorway wearing pajamas.

It was after ten.

Normally he would have been bouncing a basketball by eight.

"I'm not hungry," he said before Tanya asked.

"Come sit anyway."
