Noah was waiting near the prototype test log with new results. The vibration condition remained visible in the unaltered raw data, although the updated summary presented to executives described it as insignificant. Ethan asked whether anyone had completed a separate validation of the revised pathway. Noah shook his head and pointed to a note saying review would occur as part of certification.

"They've put the investigation on the same day as the decision," Ethan said. Noah wondered aloud whether they understood the conflict. Ethan did not answer immediately, because he knew intelligent people could convince themselves of many things when a deadline rewarded them for believing. He asked Noah to preserve the version history within the approved record system and wrote one final request for an independent assessment.

The days before Friday stretched and contracted in strange ways. At work, Ethan moved through familiar routines while other employees avoided conversations they had once welcomed. At home, he measured wing pieces with Lily, washed school uniforms, and signed permission slips. Every time his phone vibrated with an unfamiliar number, he felt a brief physical tightening that eased only when he saw it was an ordinary message.

He considered calling Richard. The chairman had always told him that the door to his office remained open, and Ethan had no reason to believe that promise had been withdrawn. But Richard was traveling, and Ethan did not want an important safety report to receive attention only because the person submitting it had once been a partner. If the system could protect his concern only after his old title was revealed, then the system needed more than one employee reinstated.

On Wednesday evening, Lily asked whether they could make pancakes on Saturday morning. She wanted to practice presenting her science fair project afterward, and she planned to use a toy microphone borrowed from a classmate to make the demonstration feel official. Ethan wrote PANCAKES in large letters on the family calendar. He added a small airplane beside it and promised to be home for both events.

Thursday night, Vanessa asked the engineering director to certify that the last revisions had resolved the vibration concern. The director hesitated, then offered a statement that the team had not observed instability in its most recent restricted runs. Vanessa accepted the wording and placed it in the executive packet without the qualifier explaining the conditions under which the runs had occurred. She told herself that the full certification would clarify any remaining uncertainty, overlooking the fact that the certification was the decision Ethan was warning against.

At Northstar the following morning, Ethan listened to a motor turning smoothly in a separate maintenance bay. He completed three service orders and helped a new technician find a fault that had taken the man nearly a week to diagnose. He did not tell his colleagues about the meeting invitation. There was no point in frightening people with a possibility that had not yet become a fact.
