Clare accepted the correction. Then she asked a different question, one that had been growing in her mind since seeing the archived diagrams. "Why are your initials on the original control architecture?" Ethan's face changed slightly, not with surprise, but with resignation. He glanced toward the dining table where Lily was practicing a speech about listening to warnings.

"That was another part of my life," he said. Clare told him the diagrams were being examined under an independent safety review and that she needed to know whether he had firsthand knowledge of the original design restrictions. Ethan answered that he did, and that the same restriction had been removed from the current configuration without adequate validation. He would explain the technical history to a qualified reviewer, but he would not endorse a test simply because a contract depended on it.

Clare's phone rang while they were speaking. Richard had located another sealed board record, one that confirmed the technical founder's standing and the reserved certification clause. She answered on speaker after asking Ethan's permission, and her father began without a greeting. "Clare, the original founding agreement is clear. Ethan created the architecture we built Northstar around, and his technical approval was never supposed to be automatic."

Lily glanced up at the sound of her father's name. Clare looked at Ethan, who seemed tired rather than proud of the revelation. Richard continued, admitting that he should have ensured the certification protection remained visible to current leadership even while Ethan's personal history stayed private. He asked whether Ethan would speak with him before Monday.

"I will speak with you," Ethan answered, "but I won't give you a signature because somebody has finally remembered where it belongs." Richard said he understood. Ethan had heard the phrase from executives many times, and he did not yet know whether his old friend meant it. He told Richard that Monday's review should not proceed until the engineering issue was resolved, regardless of whether Ethan attended.

After the call, Clare stood in the kitchen beside a row of children's drawings and tried to reconcile the man before her with the person she had imagined from the old records. She had expected an ambitious founding engineer protecting his status or someone bitter about losing power. Instead, Ethan had stepped away from public leadership willingly, and everything in his home suggested that choice had been made for a person far smaller than an aerospace company. The realization did not remove the practical disaster ahead of her, but it changed what she believed success would look like.

"Do you want to come back?" she asked. Ethan looked at her, surprised by the question. "To Northstar?" She nodded. He said he wanted the system made safe, his employment record corrected, and the people who had suppressed warnings held accountable.

"Those aren't all the same as wanting a job," Clare observed. "No," Ethan said. "They're not." Lily appeared beside the doorway at that moment and asked whether the rehearsal panel was ready, rescuing them both from an answer that needed more time.
