"You taught your daughter that warnings matter," Clare said. "I think it's time I prove I learned the same lesson." The answer reached Ethan because it did not ask him to rescue her. She had accepted that her position might be the price of making a decision she should have made earlier, and she did not seem to expect gratitude for finally making it.

Later, Lily sat in an empty meeting room drawing blue stars on her presentation folder while Ethan finished explaining the old architecture to the independent reviewer. Clare came in to ask whether she needed a ride home, and Lily said that her father always promised to be back for dinner and always tried very hard to keep that promise. Clare looked through the glass toward Ethan, who was gathering his notes without waiting for an executive to dismiss him. She began to understand why he had refused an office upstairs.

"My dad says people sometimes stop listening when they think they're in charge," Lily said. Clare smiled faintly. "He has a point." Lily continued coloring, then asked whether the people at Northstar had been mean to him because they did not know who he used to be.

The question made Clare pause. "They should have listened whether they knew or not," she answered. Lily considered the response and apparently found it acceptable. Clare wished the company had reached the same conclusion without requiring a failed test, a dismissal, and the rediscovery of a sealed founding agreement.

Before leaving, Ethan found Clare in the hallway reading the board letter again. He asked whether she wanted to tell him what the directors were considering, although he already knew. She admitted that several believed she had mishandled the federal negotiation and the restructuring, while others thought replacing her now would make the company appear unstable. Her tone contained none of the certainty she had worn during their first meeting in Laboratory Three.

"What do you think?" she asked. Ethan did not answer immediately. He thought of how she had accepted Vanessa's assurances, how quickly she had believed the engineering summary, and how slowly she had begun to question the structure that permitted both mistakes. He also thought of the decision she had made after the truth became impossible to avoid.

"I think you failed me before you understood what happened," he said. Clare lowered her eyes but did not interrupt. "I think you have been trying to correct that failure without pretending it wasn't yours. That matters, but the board has to decide what it's worth to the company."

Clare nodded. "Will you come to the meeting?" she asked. Ethan looked toward the visitor room where Lily was waiting. He had not returned to Northstar to determine who occupied the chief executive's chair, and he did not want to become another powerful figure deciding matters on the strength of an old title. Still, the board would be judging the person who had protected the safety standard when protecting it became expensive.

"If they want the truth about the technical decision, I'll tell them," he answered. Clare said that was all she could reasonably ask. They walked together to the elevator, not as employer and employee, and not yet as friends, but as two people who understood how much remained unfinished. The doors opened and Lily ran to take her father's hand.
