She agreed again. "And if the system cannot be made safe by the deadline," Ethan continued, "we miss the deadline." Clare held his gaze. "We miss it," she answered, and for the first time he saw that she had actually considered the cost.

He went to the coat rack by the door and reached for his jacket. Before he could put it on, Clare's phone rang with her father's name. Richard reported that the sealed founding record contained an additional historical note confirming Ethan's role before Northstar had even acquired its name. Clare looked at the man standing beside the kitchen table, suddenly aware that the quiet technician had helped create the very platform upon which her career stood.

At 9:46, Ethan entered Northstar without an employee badge. The receptionist recognized him and instinctively reached toward the tray of temporary visitor passes, but Clare shook her head and explained that he was there at her request as an independent adviser. She did not call him a special guest or a founder in the lobby. She wanted his role understood without turning an apology into a public performance.

The elevator doors closed around them. Ethan stood where he had stood hundreds of mornings, facing the same polished steel wall while the car rose toward floors he had rarely needed to visit. Clare looked straight ahead, aware of the employees watching them through the glass as the doors slid shut. A few would recognize the unusual sight of their chief executive waiting while a former technician stepped into the car.

Richard met them on the thirty-first floor. He held out his hand, and Ethan shook it after a pause that contained six years of distance and several days of difficult truths. "Northstar began with three people," Richard told Clare as they entered a conference room. "Two investors and an engineer. The investors brought money; Ethan brought the architecture that gave the money something worth building."

Ethan sat at the table without ceremony. "That was another life," he said. Clare asked whether that life still gave him the knowledge needed to help the current team, and he answered that it did. Richard placed the original agreement beside the recovered safety report so the two documents could be considered together rather than treated as competing claims to authority.

The engineering discussion lasted more than an hour. Ethan refused to declare the current design hopeless, but he insisted on separating observed data from assumptions and accepted explanations from unverified ones. The group traced the changes across multiple revisions, identified the missing original restriction, and listed the questions that an independent test plan would have to answer. For the first time in months, people left a meeting with a longer list of questions and a clearer understanding of the work ahead.

At 10:30 Clare convened the board with Vanessa present. She displayed the final twelve-page report, its submission record, the misleading summary, and the disciplinary complaints created after Ethan refused certification. She identified the points at which her own oversight had failed, then explained that the evidence justified an investigation into document handling and retaliatory personnel decisions. Vanessa objected that she had acted under delegated authority, and Clare acknowledged the delegation without permitting it to excuse the conduct.
