“You changed the source?”

“Yes.”

“Because you knew she was taking it?”

“Because I no longer wanted that fixture connected to my drinking-water well while people were repeatedly trespassing and defeating locks.”

He studied me.

“You understand I’m going to need everything.”

“I made copies.”

“Everything.”

“You can have the originals when Henry says so.”

“Henry?”

“De La Cruz.”

Kesler nodded.

“I know him.”

“Then you know why I’m not giving you a box without calling him.”

“That’s fair.”

Outside, Denise’s backyard had transformed.

The same space that had been staged for photographs that morning was covered in towels, abandoned shoes, overturned glasses, emergency gear, and confused residents.

The pool itself sat strangely still.

Water that had represented luxury twelve hours earlier had become evidence.

Denise stood near her patio door wearing a robe.

Even across the fence I could see the way she watched my house.

She knew.

Maybe she did not know how.

But she knew.

Deputy Kesler followed my gaze.

“That her?”

“Yes.”

“Mrs. Caldwell?”

“Yes.”

“She says the hose was part of a longstanding shared-water agreement.”

I laughed once.

“Ask for the agreement.”

“She says it was verbal.”

“With who?”

“The previous owner.”

“My uncle died before she claims the agreement started.”

Kesler looked back at me.

“You have proof of that?”

“Death certificate should work.”

That time he did smile.

“Mr. Harden, you might be one of the most prepared complainants I’ve ever met.”

“I had time.”

Apparently, Denise had too.

Because before sundown, her attorney called Henry.

By Monday morning, everything had exploded beyond a neighbor dispute.

Henry filed a formal complaint supported by the evidence.

The sheriff’s office began documenting the entries onto my property.

The damaged locks mattered.

The videos mattered.

The attempted legal justification mattered.

But the financial records turned out to matter even more.

Lisa Dominguez requested a complete HOA audit.

Denise fought it.

That alone convinced several board members it was necessary.

The emergency meeting took place Tuesday evening in the Silver Creek clubhouse.

I was invited because so much of the dispute involved my property.

I almost declined.

Then Henry said, “Go.”

“Why?”

“Because people need to look at you when they decide whether they still believe her.”

So I went.

Forty of forty-two households attended.

I had never seen that many expensive vehicles in one parking lot.

Inside, people filled every chair.

Some stood along the wall.

Tom Kincaid sat near the front.

Dolores attended with her grandson.

Beverly Whitfield sat beside her husband.

Curtis came even though he was not a member.

“Why are you here?” I whispered.

“History.”

“That’s not a reason.”

“It is when you’re seventy-one.”
