Denise entered ten minutes late.

Of course she did.

She wore a cream suit.

Hair perfect.

Makeup perfect.

No sunglasses.

No visible sign that four days earlier she had stood in a contaminated swimming pool screaming in front of half the neighborhood.

That composure almost worked.

The room quieted.

For a few seconds, she looked like the Denise everybody knew.

Then someone whispered, “That’s the pool woman.”

Curtis coughed into his fist.

Denise heard it.

Her shoulders tightened.

David Chen opened the meeting.

He was a compact man in his forties with rectangular glasses and the patient expression of an engineer who had spent years waiting for everyone else to stop talking so numbers could be discussed.

“This meeting has two purposes,” he said. “First, the circumstances surrounding unauthorized water use associated with the Caldwell property. Second, irregularities in HOA expenditures.”

Denise immediately raised a hand.

“Point of order.”

David looked at her.

“You are not chairing this meeting.”

“I’m president.”

“A motion to suspend presidential authority pending investigation passed five minutes before you entered.”

Murmurs spread through the room.

Denise stared at him.

“That vote is invalid.”

Lisa lifted a binder.

“It is permitted under Section 8.4.”

Denise’s expression changed.

For years she had weaponized the rulebook.

Now somebody else had read it.

“That section requires cause.”

David looked toward the packed room.

“I believe we have sufficient cause to discuss whether cause exists.”

A few people laughed.

Denise turned.

“Is this a joke?”

Tom Kincaid spoke from the second row.

“No. The joke was fining me because my dead wife’s boxes were in my garage.”

Silence.

Denise looked at him.

“Thomas, that violation was handled according to—”

“My name is Tom.”

She stopped.

He continued.

“And I paid you one hundred fifty dollars because my truck was visible while I was trying to figure out what to do with thirty-nine years of my wife’s life.”

Nobody moved.

“That has nothing to do with the water matter,” Denise said.

“Maybe not,” Tom replied. “But we finally have a meeting where you don’t control the microphone.”

Applause started from the back.

Not much.

Then more.

Denise sat down.

Lisa presented the audit findings.

Twenty-four monthly charges.

Three hundred fifty dollars each.

Supplemental water services.

Total: $8,400.

“No invoices,” Lisa said.

“No utility records supporting the purchases. No vendor contracts. No reimbursement documentation.”

Denise leaned toward the microphone.

“Those expenses were legitimate administrative reimbursements.”

“For what?” David asked.

“Water acquisition.”

“From whom?”

She hesitated.

“The expenses relate to community water needs.”

“From whom did you purchase the water?”

“Various sources.”

“Name one.”

The room went silent.

Denise looked at Lisa.

Then David.
