“And Nathan’s experience?”

“I thought if it was truly over afterward, we could move forward.”

“Without him ever knowing the full history.”

Meredith looked at me.

“Yes.”

That was the moment I knew.

Not angrily.

Quietly.

I did not want to stay.

At the third session, I told her.

Meredith cried for nearly forty minutes.

I cried too.

That surprised me.

People imagine the betrayed spouse leaves feeling righteous.

I felt devastated.

There is no prize for being the person who did not cheat.

You still lose the marriage.

You still divide holidays.

You still move furniture.

You still wake up in a bedroom where the person who slept beside you for ten years is suddenly absent.

Being right does not protect you from grief.

We sold the house six months later.

Neither of us could bear keeping it.

The morning of closing, I walked through the empty rooms one final time.

The dining room where Meredith admitted the “unresolved feelings.”

The bedroom where her phone had lit up.

The driveway where Callum opened his car door.

I expected anger.

Mostly, I felt tired.

Meredith arrived while I was standing in the kitchen.

“We have twenty minutes,” she said.

“I know.”

She looked different.

Hair shorter.

No makeup.

She had lost weight.

I hated noticing because some part of me still wanted her to be okay.

She walked to the window.

“Do you remember moving in?”

“Yes.”

“We ate pizza on the floor.”

“You refused to buy a temporary table because you said we’d never replace it.”

She smiled faintly.

“And we didn’t.”

We stood there quietly.

Then Meredith said:

“I’m sorry I made you feel like your caution was the reason I cheated.”

I looked at her.

“That’s specific.”

“I’ve had time.”

She continued.

“You were cautious.”

“You were predictable.”

“Sometimes you were boring.”

I laughed despite myself.

She smiled briefly.

“But those weren’t betrayals.”

“No.”

“I turned normal marriage into something I believed I needed to escape.”

“I kept telling myself Callum represented a more authentic version of me.”

“And?”

“He represented a version of me with no responsibilities.”

I nodded.

“That sounds more accurate.”

Her eyes filled.

“He and I tried to talk after everything came out.”

“I know.”

“Did Elowen tell you?”

“No.”

“You just look unsurprised.”

“I assumed.”

Meredith looked down.

“We lasted two conversations.”

“What happened?”

“We blamed each other.”

That made sense.

“He said I never intended to choose him.”

“Were you?”

“No.”

The honesty no longer hurt in the same way.

“I wanted him to stay available.”

“In case?”

“In case I decided my life with you wasn’t enough.”

I leaned against the counter.

“Thank you for finally saying it that clearly.”

“I hate saying it.”

“I know.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I was selfish.”

“Yes.”

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

“I know that probably sounds impossible.”

“It doesn’t.”

She looked surprised.

I continued.

“People can love somebody and still act selfishly.”
