“It says there was a disruption in the networking area.”

“What disruption?”

Dana swallowed.

“A guest reported that you were refusing to leave a reserved section and making attendees uncomfortable.”

Willa looked around.

She was sitting alone.

Reading.

“Do I appear to be disrupting anyone?”

Dana’s face reddened.

“I’m just following the report.”

“Who filed it?”

“I’m not authorized to share names.”

Willa already knew.

“What would you like me to do?”

Dana seemed relieved that the conversation had become procedural.

“We’d like you to use the general-attendee area on the second floor.”

Willa reached into her blazer.

Removed the digital credential card from its sleeve.

Held it out.

Dana looked.

VIP / KEYNOTE ACCESS.

Her eyes widened.

“This says VIP.”

“Yes.”

Dana stared.

“Then…”

Willa waited.

Dana looked at the complaint sheet again.

“I was told—”

“I know.”

Willa’s tone softened slightly.

“What’s your name?”

“Dana.”

“Dana, you are not the person who created this situation.”

The young woman visibly relaxed.

Then Willa added:

“But you are participating in it now.”

Dana’s face changed.

Willa continued.

“You were told a Black woman was making people uncomfortable.”

“You walked over.”

“You looked at me.”

“You saw me sitting quietly.”

“You checked none of the facts before asking me to leave.”

Dana looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

“I believe you.”

Willa stood.

She gathered her iPad and coffee.

“You’re doing what someone told you.”

“That doesn’t make you malicious.”

“But someday you may wish you had asked one more question before doing it.”

Dana whispered:

“I can check with my supervisor.”

Willa looked at the lounge.

Garrett stood across the room.

He lifted his coffee cup slightly.

A tiny toast.

Victory.

Willa looked back at Dana.

“No.”

“I’ll go.”

She entered the elevator.

Only after the doors closed did she let herself inhale deeply.

The lobby was quieter.

She sat near the revolving entrance.

Rachel Bennett called eleven minutes later.

“Willa, where are you?”

“Lobby.”

“Why?”

“I was removed from the VIP lounge.”

Silence.

Rachel’s voice changed.

“By whom?”

“Dana.”

“For what?”

“Apparently I was making other guests uncomfortable.”

Another silence.

“Stay there.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“Good.”

Rachel arrived three minutes later.

Her heels clicked sharply across the marble.

She was angry enough that the concierge watched her pass.

Rachel sat beside Willa.

“I pulled the complaint.”

“And?”

“Garrett Sinclair.”

“I know.”

Rachel looked at her.

“He claimed you were harassing VIP attendees and refusing to leave a reserved area without credentials.”

“I showed Dana my credential.”

“I know.”

Rachel’s jaw tightened.
