“That’s not specific.”

He looked embarrassed.

“For detaining you without verifying the complaint first.”

“Thank you.”

She picked up her iPad.

The second guard said:

“We were following information we received.”

Willa looked at him.

“I know.”

That sentence had followed discrimination through more institutions than she could count.

I was following information.

I was following policy.

I was following an instruction.

Sometimes all three were true.

None automatically made the result acceptable.

She walked back into the corridor.

Above the registration desk hung the summit banner:

INNOVATION STARTS WITH INCLUSION.

Willa did not stop.

At 12:53, the elevator arrived.

The doors opened.

Garrett Sinclair stood alone inside.

For the first time all morning, neither had an audience.

Garrett recognized her.

His posture shifted.

Willa saw a small flicker behind his eyes.

Not remorse exactly.

Discomfort.

Perhaps even curiosity that she was still in the building.

He moved slightly aside.

“Going up.”

His tone was almost friendly.

As though nothing had happened.

Willa entered.

Pressed four.

The button was already illuminated.

The elevator doors closed.

Fourteen seconds.

Garrett glanced at her once.

Then at the floor numbers.

“You get everything sorted out?”

Willa turned her head.

Garrett gave a small shrug.

“Security.”

“I saw them talking to you.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He smiled faintly.

“These events get weird sometimes.”

Willa looked at him.

“Do they?”

The smile faded.

He faced forward.

At the fourth floor, Garrett exited left toward the main ballroom.

Willa turned right.

Green room.

He did not look back.

At 1:00, Willa entered the room where she was supposed to prepare for the keynote.

Rachel was waiting.

So was a technician.

A monitor showed the ballroom slowly filling.

Willa set down her iPad.

Rachel said:

“Security confirmed the second removal request did not originate from me.”

“I assumed.”

“We’ve suspended the two staff members who escalated it until we finish reviewing.”

“Don’t punish Dana for following bad supervision.”

“She’ll be interviewed.”

“Good.”

Rachel watched Willa.

“You still want to speak?”

“Yes.”

“You can cancel.”

“I know.”

“You can also use the original deck.”

Willa looked at the forty-two-slide presentation displayed on the iPad.

Market cycles.

Capital discipline.

Founder-investor alignment.

Portfolio construction.

Several weeks of work.

Suddenly it felt useless.

She deleted the local presentation file.

Rachel stared.

“You just deleted your keynote.”

“No.”

Willa opened a blank document.

“I deleted the slides.”

Then she began to write.

For thirty-eight minutes, she barely moved.

Rachel left her alone.

Willa wrote about the chair.

The first assumption.

The laughter.
